We had one car in the family because only one person had to work in order to take care of that family. Parents give cars to their kids now because 17 yr olds can't afford a car and the outrageous price of insurance on a 7.25 per hour part time job.

Hard work back then made things in life attainable. College tuition was affordable, housing was affordable, health care was affordable.

A lot of them (not all! ) have some kind of mental block on this.
Their lives were affordable. They didn't have to go in debt for an education, could afford health care, buy a house, etc.

And also if you can't afford to take care of a pet you shouldn't bring one home. Not you, it should just be a general rule. The pain of loss and the guilt for not being able to protect them isn't worth it in the end.
