Is Dipper an occupational surname? If so, what was the general trade and what was being dipped?

Not much of a publisher if they have forgotten the concept of books. I may lack parchment in my own collection, I live close to the Kedermister library in Langley St Mary’s. langleystmary.wordpress.com/kedermister-...

Aylesbury Town Council | Clock Tower

In Aylesbury while getting caffeinated for an archive session, I’m pondering the new status of Market Square Clock Tower-with an English Heritage Grade 2 Listing. Despite Nicolaus Pevsner’s description β€œInsipid Gothic with a Spire”. www.aylesburytowncouncil.gov.uk/2026/03/cloc... #OnePlaceWednesday

Personally I would use their own postcode and address to create an account. The reason systems ask for a postcode is to reduce errors, like having to enter an email address twice.

The wills access need a login now and it is a right pain. Something about expecting me to need other services like parking fines etc. The main catalogue should contain the wills but it doesn’t.

That is nearly on the level of being told by a nun that she was giving up being nice for Lent. At the time she had a difficult year 8 class for IT.

In #Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy By walking and understanding the road and potential difficult areas informs why Colnbrook is where it is. Also informs why many Coaching Inns are placed where they are. Steep hills where additional horses are required for a short distance is one type of obstacle.

The Green Man, Market Square, Aylesbury

#OnePlaceWednesday Sitting having coffee and considering the demise of The Green Man, Aylesbury. The site was integrity was lost to provide a fire escape for the modern shopping centre behind it. Any prospective owner gets an insecure site with limited use.

The Slough Estates railway branch was built by Italian P.O.Ws. About 1918. Slough Museum may be able to help, they are based on the Trading Estate.

I am surprised about the lack of sample testing which could have found this sort of problem. It also does not help having the parish register for Warrington appearing in Cheshire data set. The silver lining is the prospect that family history societies will be selling indexes to Ancestry Indexes.

People of Warrington, Lancashire. I feel sorry for anybody trying to find anybody in the 1700s. Apparently the image was not read by a human as the results bear little relation to the text. If the text is read and any occupation is given, it is used as a surname.

#OnePlaceStudy Samuel Smith, licensed Hawker stopped on the night of 2nd April 1871 in the family van with his wife Drusilla in Colnbrook. Samuel was born in Wandsworth, Drusilla was born in Harefield, Mdx. Married in Paignton, Devon. What more would you expect when two travelling families marry?

#OnePlaceWednesday Today is all about affidavits for burials in woollen. Noting who the affidavit was before by who. The latter almost always a woman. Indications of where she lived in a parish as they went to the closest person to make the declaration.

I’m taking the opportunity of visiting Aylesbury between forecast storms. Blue skies at the moment, although that will have gone. More work transcribing an adjacent parish (Datchet) to Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy #OnePlaceWednesday.

Reviewing the process is a constant with my #OnePlaceStudy , mainly to ensure I have the information to tell the story of #Colnbrook #OnePlaceWednesday. The process also ensures I have confidence in what I’m putting online.

The shops know there is a short time before Lent! If there is an outbreak of Christian fervour at the same time… Sales will plummet.

Happy New Year everybody. On this day in 1715 John Burcombe, Weaver of Colnbrook married Elizabeth Howard at All Hallows Barking by the Tower. They probably lived on the south side of the High Street as all their six children were baptised in St Michael's Horton. #OnePlaceStudies #Colnbrook-OPS

On this day, 24th December 1725 Colnbrook Town Houses Charity paid out to the Poor. 17 Horton people received Β£2 among them while 29 Langley people received Β£3 17s 6d. Average received 2s & the most was 5s 6d for Langley's Children. #OnePlaceStudies Merry Christmas to all & keep researching in 2026

When the new candidate, Mr. Bent Esq arrived at Aylesbury, horses were unhitched and his carriage was drawn in by cheering crowd. The joy of the Voters was due to the prospect of gaining 10 guineas each as the competition for Votes progressed. The first Distribution took place in the Bull’s Head.

In Aylesbury elections were expensive. In the 1802 Borough elections the candidates were spending over 3500 Guineas for the Voters. There were three candidates for two seats in Parliament. Many of the County landed gentry could not afford to have political ambitions.

Today I’m finishing the transcription of Henry Steven’s will (1852) which is long and tedious & contains three codicils. With provisions for replacing trustees who go β€œbeyond the seas”. Also what to do if son goes bankrupt who was excluded from a bequest of property. #Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy

Joiners apprentice. Similar to a carpenter. Probably got another two years of the apprenticeship to go. A seven year apprenticeship is not unusual, from 14 to 21 years.
