The job title "farmer" has always been intentionally slippery in how most Americans use it.

But in the occupational stats, it's people who own the farm. (They may own all the land, rent some, or event rent all of it, but the farm is still their business that they own & operate.)

In every Republican presidency of my lifetime there's been a recession and a new war in the Middle East.

Per The Economist/YouGov, half of Americans support ABOLISHING ICE.

Literally, "abolishing."

Many Americans hold contradictory opinions on the same policies Our new poll finds question wording can swing opinion by 20+ points on immigration, the budget, and transgender rights. That's a problem for people who use polls to tell politicians what voters want.

New post!
Many Americans hold contradictory opinions on the same policies. Question wording effects can swing opinions by 20+ points on immigration, the budget, and transgender rights.
That's a problem for people who interpret polls for a living.

The entire Democratic strategy debate β€” "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? β€” is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close!

American Psychological Association Reaffirms Support For Trans Youth Care, Pushes Back Against NYT A recent article from Jesse Singal in the New York Times seemed to indicate the organization might be quietly retreating from supporting trans youth care.

1. Major news on trans youth care. The American Psychological Association has reaffirmed its full support for its 2024 guidelines supporting trans youth car.e

Many people quoting it, first saw it cited here: crookedtimber.org/2018/03/21/l...

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.

If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.

If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

Some may be saying, β€œyes, we knew this”, but we don’t really know know until we see data like these.

And something we may not have known that this paper shows is that once a person gets into the right wing silo, we’ve lost them. Changing to the chronological feed does not bring them back.

Babbage, 1830, discussing the problem that scientists selectively report findings that they want to be true.

Confirmation bias is a strong human tendency. This is why we need to design science in a way that prevents conformation bias from leading us away from the truth.

I bet if you just did a simple survey, not one American in 10K would be able to accurately tell you the current level of immigration to the US, whether that level is up or down from the previous decade, what countries are most represented among immigrants, or what current US immigration policy is.
