Catkins & buds on a hazel.
The male catkins release pollen & appear in early spring before the leaves. They look like little hanging tassels. The tiny buds with pink tips are the female flowers. Both male & female flowers grow on the same tree, just in different forms.

Lots of activity on the River Nairn with displaying mandarins & a singing dipper on the same stretch. Spring is definitely on its way.

Saw my first two black-throated diver of the year at Burghead this morning & found this feather on the beach, which I think may be from a black-throated diver too?

White-billed divers are always seen along the Moray Coast in the Spring. I have seen them in April the past few years, but never as early as February before. So great to see this one from Roseisle, Burghead this morning.

The garden areas were blanketed with clusters of snowdrops at Loch Leven earlier this week. A sure sign that Spring is on its way.

First signs of spring: crocuses at Loch Leven this week. Feels like winter is nearing its end and longer days are on their way.

🤣🤣🤣
So long as it’s not on the wrong side of Loch Flemington! 🤣
It’s a good day when you photograph a Mountain hare in its winter coat. They’re specially adapted to colder, uplands across the UK. Changes in climate can make this less effective, highlighting how sensitive wildlife can be to environmental change #Winterwatch #UKWildlife #Nature

Managed to get to Loch Loy to see the blue-winged teal which has been seen off and on since mid January. It’s a stunning looking bird, a rare visitor from North America.

It took me until October last year to see grey partridge so it was great to see a group of at least 12 in Moray over the weekend.
