Photo looking at GPS station with large sign in front of it. Utility box has USGS logo.
Closer view of monitoring station.
Photo of monitoring station from a different point of view, looking towards the San Andreas fault that runs along the base of the mountain range in the distance. The visitor center building is visible near the station.
Photo of educational sign: Using the Global Positioning System (GPS) to Study Fault Slip and Earthquakes
More geophysics fun at Carrizo Plain! This GPS station behind the visitor center had good signage on the basics of why & how GPS is used for measuring the station's precise position, to measure movement along the san andreas fault.
Would have been better if they'd linked to the data, tho.

I can't agree. Catastrophic events at the global scale do occur at intervals ranging from a few decades to about 100 years. I don't see why people think we are somehow now exempt. I don't know what the wisest take is, but denying historical reality is not helpful.

Nope. The NSF has existed since 1950. I for one will be dead before US science recovers fully from the devastation of this past year.

More wasteful make-work for the agencies. The idea is to throw sand in the gears, and it's purely malicious. It's even more fun with reduced staff to deal with all of the extra administrative burden.

I'm an earthquake scientist - really. I just keep posting Kilauea and mud volcanoes because the camera loves them!

A line curve showing number of awards for fiscal year 2026 compared to fiscal years 2021-2025 across NSF. The fiscal year 2026 curve lies well below curves for other fiscal years.
NSF Update
Funding curve overall. A little bit of progress in the past week, but only a little bit.

This NYT article discusses the busy earthquake swarm in San Ramon from the perspective of scientists and residents. It's pretty good! One quibble - the display of old equipment is not in Annemarie's office, it's in a hallway near the building entrance. Ungated link: archive.ph/J2Jcg

"As I was saying, " (repeat question) until he answers it. Reporters never do this; there must be some structural reason (perhaps they are not allowed to). It would be worth losing access IMO - he's not providing information anyway.
