Absolute destruction of the First Amendment to enable absolute destruction of a habitable planet.
Le Monde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated
Random memory, I once received an envelope sent from America to Newcastle University (where I was teaching) which had-if memory serves-60 British pounds in notes. No letter. No sender info. Just money sent to an address the sender knew would get to me. Still confused but tyvm mysterious sender! π

From the shores of Village Island, home of Mamalilikulla First Nation. See my previous post for a fuller context.
No-one has lived on the island since the mid 90s. Settlers had previously occupied it to run the day school and monitor the activities of the nation.

...to read about its making, as she proudly carries on Kwakwaka'wakw traditions which the Canadian government tried to destroy.
Image here, along with a pic of Storm harvesting the cedar bark which she used to make the bracelet. It's all related. Gilakas'la, Rande & Billy for getting me there!
The son of Dan Cranmer, Bill Cranmer, was a very well respected hereditary chief and influential leader of the 'Namgis Nation. He was also the grandfather of Storm Cranmer who I have posted about a number of times on my Insta page. Scroll down & click on the image of the bracelet she made for me...

45 people including Chiefs and Matriarchs were arrested. Half were sent to prison for 2-3 months. The others avoided jail time by surrendering all of their dancing masks, regalia and other cultural items used in potlatches. 750 items were taken, ending up in museum collections...
On Christmas Day, 1921, Hereditary Chief Dan Cranmer held a now well known secret Potlatch for 300+ guests (the largest recorded potlatch in coastal BC), in defiance of Canadian law which banned the practice from 1885-1951 as an attempt to eradicate Indigenous culture...
Of all of the incredible places on Earth that I've been so lucky to visit, Village Island is hands down my favourite. The sense of peace felt in 'Mimkwamlis, the ancestral village of the Mamalilikulla First Nation is impossible to describe. Peace despite its difficult history.

Sharing Rebecca Solnitβs frustration - while sheβs referring largely to the shocking situation in the US, this also counts for people here in the EU when it comes to the inertia in tackling the real issues: climatological and ecosystem collapse (as opposed to blaming migration for everything).
I appreciate all the people recommending the Shock Doctrine. I've been thinking about what makes Trump's use of these tactics a little different.
In recent decades, shock tactics were used mainly to rapidly impose neoliberal economic policies. But what Trump is doing goes way beyond that.

It is! Thanks, Greg! π He also hasn't been back to England since we left in 2017 so we plan to stop off there on the way to reconnect him with family and friends. It's going to be great and well needed!
Me speaking with a travel agent just now:
Her: "So what brings you to Europe?"
Me: "My son's going to train with Real Madrid."
Her: "SHUT. UP."
I have flown once since 2019. Deliberately. This is not a trip to pass up on though.
Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is itβs okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.
We have to sustain each other. Making joy isnβt denial, itβs how we will survive

I havenβt created an ecoartspace account on BlueSky (yet) and am using it now for personal perspectives, however, if youβre not following ecoartspace on Instagram, please do so. Each day you will learn about an artist who is addressing environmental issues in a wide range of mediums. @ecoartspace
What a breath of fresh air it is on this side of the social media pond. I'm enjoying not being force-fed posts from Musk, as a start.
Hey, Toronto! It's been a minute! 'Origin Stories' is coming your way in January! β¨
