Some molecular machines, like ribosomes, can persist for long periods of time in cells.
Could molecular aging of ribosomes shape how proteins are made?
In our new preprint we track ribosomes as they age in cells and uncover unexpected effects on translation (1/10)

Ambient RNA & barcode swapping is a serious issue in single-cell genomics. Tools such as CellBender, scAR, DecontX & SoupX. We have developed CellSweep which is faster (in some cases by a lot) and much more accurate. Extensively tested and benchmarked. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... 1/
Looking forward to #Dros26 this week. My lab is recruiting and I would be delighted to chat with anyone interested in grad school/postdoc positions in evolutionary cell biology and developmental genetics. Please reach out if interested!
So I pleased to announce the conceptual spawn of FigTree: PearTree (acronym still to be finalised). If you want to dive right in it is hosted as a web app here: artic-network.github.io/peartree (click the “Example...” button for immediate candy and then click every button you can find).
I feel like this is a great time to remind everyone that it's not even technically wrong to say that logistic regression is machine learning
We are excited to introduce Hub Space, a new hosting service that enables users to upload and visualize track hub files directly on the UCSC Genome Browser without relying on third-party hosting services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or AWS.

New NIH funding strategy has been formalized.
I really do hope scientists understand what this means for the future of science (funding) - it's not subtle.

In the largest analysis of its kind so far, researchers find that scientists embracing any type of #AI—going all the way back to early machine learning methods—consistently make the biggest professional strides. https://scim.ag/49DAlWT
Excited to share @rbrianroome.bsky.social ‘s beautiful paper on development of the dorsal horn of the mouse spinal cord @science.org
This is how the anatomical organization and cell types that process pain, touch, body position and more are laid down.

Our paper on the newest version of the Registry of candidate cis-Regulatory Elements (cCREs) is out 🧬
Huge thanks to the many collaborators, experimentalists, analysts and software developers who made this work possible — truly a team effort!
A "meme-torial" of the science is coming soon 👀
We tend to emphasize the maternal role in development: an egg cell is enormous compared to a sperm cell, and a mother gestates the embryo. But a growing body of research suggests that sperm cells carry more than just genetic information. www.quantamagazine.org/how-dads-fit...

This is an important and information rich article. I wondered about the effects by Institute. The table below (which is snipped here but is in the article) has that info. Broken down by # of grants and $ amounts.
We are thrilled to announce the first official release (v0.1.8) of #𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿, the successor to one of our flagship tool, #𝗯𝗲𝗱𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀! Based on ideas we conceived of long ago (!), this was achieved thanks to the dedication of Brent Pedersen.

On this date, Matthew Shephard died 27 years ago. He was beaten, tortured, and left for dead on fence for being gay. Please keep him and his wonderful mother Judy in your thoughts. And let's all work for a world where such horrific things do not happen to anyone. ❤️🏳️🌈
It bears repeating that nearly the entire US enterprise in science and technology has been irreversibly gutted. This is shocking.
All this loss has occurred without any real benefit to the average US citizen. Except we now have the biggest, best funded secret police force perhaps ever.
Yay for us!
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
Excited to report that Joy Bergelson (bergelsonlab.org) and I will be running a brand new GRC conference on the Function of Evolving Systems in the summer of 2026. The 2028 one will be chaired by Mikhail Tikhonov (physics.wustl.edu/people/mikha...) and @asanchezlab.bsky.social! Stay tuned!
FlyBase.org release FB2025_03 is live! Go enjoy the refreshed data.
Those who enjoyed the plenary talk from @mollyprz.bsky.social this morning at #SMBE2025 might like to read more about this work in this 2024 @plosbiology.org paper with @natanaels.bsky.social &co: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
