Exclusive: Key US infectious-diseases centre to drop pandemic preparation
Staff members have been instructed to scrub this topic and ‘biodefense’ from the agency’s website.
The pandemic preparedness programme at NIAD is to be cut in yet another inexplicable decision by Bhattacharya. Without the research that was done by institutes such as the NIAD that was already looking at coronaviruses we would not have had such speedy vaccine development 🧪🧵 #HealthPolicy

Enhancing Assessment Review: A model for review and revolution - CONFERENCE TALK SLIDES
This presentation outlines the development, implementation, and impact of the "Enhancing Assessment Review" (EAR) model at the University of Manchester. Designed by Jen McBride, Sally Hickson, and Nicky High, EAR involves a small team, mostly external to the discipline-context, quickly and effectively evaluate assessments across programmes and provide constructive recommendations for their enhancement. The review covered over 400 assessment points across 15+ programmes, impacting over 2,000 students. Significant outcomes included a noticeable shift towards more coherent, student-informed assessment practices. Key areas addressed included assessment volume, timing, alignment, authenticity, inclusivity, and the integration of student voice. Feedback from both students and staff has been outstanding, and highlights the model’s success in enhancing transparency, collaboration, and pedagogic effectiveness. This resource offers a replicable framework for institutions seeking a scalable, partnership-based approach to assessment enhancement.
@penarthkate.bsky.social we’ve also been up to similar here in Manchester: e.g. doi.org/10.6084/m9.f.... Very happy to chat if useful.

You can do this right now:
Think of a person who wrote a paper you love, whose work influenced or helped you, or has made your professional life better.
Search up their email address. Shoot them a quick email of thanks. It means so, so much. This is a rough time of year, share some joy.

With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

* “remember” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. It’s one of those “do I remember this or did I imagine it?” things…!

Oh wow! I remember* someone asking me this when I was a child doing such a drawing, and I responded with “that’s the air” when asked about the gap between the ground and the sky.
I’ve also thought about this quite often since!

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning
Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect.
Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.

A3. I’m very lucky to supervise psychology students’ empirical projects, and my students are interested in T&L questions. I discuss my approach to teaching - and how it’s informed by this research - in my own practice. Which then means students are more interested… and the cycle continues (so far!)

A1. They’re the skills that help learners engage with their learning; both the subject-matter and broader skills development. It gets quite meta, and needs to be tailored to where the learner is in their learning and what success looks like to them (while also being evidence-based!) #LTHEchat
