Iβm curious, do you find it is consistently returning this level of depth and accuracy, or does it vary or decline? I ask as Iβve experienced inconsistencies with other models and platforms. Some monetise accuracy. Iβve not tried this one yet.
Iβm also disappointed thereβs no characterisation of the endothelial cells showing they are indeed endothelial. The lack of polarisation under flow for the iBMEC is puzzling. Also thatβs a very leaky if 2 MDa is crossing (iEC).

Happy #FluorescenceFriday Normally, I'm all about the endothelium, but this time it's some lovely tight-junctions from an epithelial monolayer. There are multiple barriers in the human brain and now we are focusing on the blood-CSF barrier #malaria #neuroscience
In 2021 I was awarded funding by the Danish 3Rs/Landbrugsstyrelsen to work on BBB organoids. We've shown they can model cerebral malaria and tissue tropism in Lyme disease. You can read more about it in more detail here: bit.ly/3XbVnUg and here bit.ly/3167j5q

Fantastic afternoon of all things 3D cell culture/organoids/spheroids. So many interesting talks covering a range of tissues and organs, from my personal favourite the BBB, to the retina, intestinal organoids, tonsil/thymus organoids, liver and full thickness skin models π€― #malaria #neuroscience
Throwback to that time we blinded our parasites using the characters from Beverly Hills 90210! Fun times! Just wish we couldβve used those names in the paper instead of HB3VAR03 etc π€£ #malaria #parasitology #neuroscience
By comparing multiple isolates from Lyme neuro, non-Lyme neuro and N America, we observed only those from Lyme neuro patients crossing the barrier
β¦and we donβt just use them for cerebral malaria. We also use them to investigate Lyme neuroborreliosis more commonly found here in Europe.
In doing so, this leads to swelling and BBB dysfunction
By utilizing ICAM-1, a subset can enter endothelial cells and cross the BBB
So what do we do in my lab? π€ We use BBB-organoids to study how RBCs infected with malaria parasites interact with ICAM-1β¦.
