You don't have to go to the playground or build a sandcastle on the beach to play. Playing is a 'way of being' that you can apply at any time. In your work, in conversations with people, when reading the newspaper, when dancing, actually in all the things you do in a day. Do you dare to play in your mind, with your own thoughts, with new perspectives or unconventional ideas?
We often think that play is something only children or artists can do. But anyone can do this. And anyone can lose it. I had lost it myself a few years ago and my friend Onno, that makes amazing poems, too. That was the reason why, in this project, we allowed ourselves to play again.
Onno and I realised that when we stop playing, we lose the space to be vulnerable. And without vulnerability there is no space to grow. And when there is no space to grow, you get stuck - in ourselves, in our ideas, in how we relate to the world.
What we did in this project is obviously one of the most intimate forms of vulnerability. But the nude self-portraits and the paper rolls were just one way to strip back the layers and invite honesty. You don’t need to be naked to be vulnerable. Vulnerability can look like saying the thing you’re afraid to say. Or letting someone see you in your doubt. Or choosing softness in a moment where everything tells you to harden.
It starts with something simple: play. Play creates space. It lets you step outside the script, it opens up room for surprise, for connection, for being present with what is rather than what should be. I am pretty sure this is something we all know. And something the world could use more of.
What do we lose when we stop playing? We all know the cliché about that childlike innocence that we lose as we mature. Play is a way of being that connects us to the world and helps us let go of control, be open and accept the unknown. Important skills we need as human beings. More in caption..

Will bluesky let me share my work? A new test I have to find out. Not a lot of followers here yet. Changing platforms is difficult, and yet I have to now because I really can't share any of my work there.
