Our study provides insights into the appropriate use of thermal imaging in goats and, more broadly, animal behaviour and welfare research.

We conclude that mean and maximum measures show promise for quantifying nasal and eye temperatures in the short term. Surface temperature varied across days, limiting comparability, and highlighting the importance of considering ambient conditions in thermal imaging research.

A lack of consensus exists re how thermal imaging technique should be best applied in behaviour & welfare research. We tested 2 subcategories of reliability, short-term repeatability (same session) and reproducibility (multiple sessions), and precision of thermal measures in two regions in goats.
