Iβll add that it appears real until you use the database links to view the article. The whole thing falls apart and itβs clear that the article doesnβt exist. This happens because AI generated citations cite fake article in real journals, leading to the fleeting impression of credibility here
In this situation, there is no article. just a made-up citation info for a non-existent article in a real journal. But if you go to look up the article itself in the journal, you can't find it.
I get sent to the journal website, not to a specific issue or volume. Since the fake citation is of an issue the library has access to, the library platform assumes that the library has access to the article.
Will do!
It does create an air of legitimacy when it appears on the library website. I'm sure whatever platform my university library uses for their catalog is also used by other university libraries.
I'm going to send a message to the library about this in case they aren't aware.
To be clear, the library isn't using AI to generate a fake article. Rather fake citation info is being transferred in a link URL to generate a temporary catalog page on the library site via standard API tools (not AI).
I was confused since I see this page on my uni's library when linked from Google Scholar, but could not get to it by searching the libraries article catalog. I realized that the link URL from Google Scholar contains the citation info - so library page is generated programmatically from the info
Here is what I see on my University library page when linked from Google scholar
When viewing the fake article in Google scholar on my university network, there is a link to access the article via my uni's library. That link sends me to a library page that makes fake article appear real... Turns out library page is made programmatically from info on Google scholar π€¦
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker π§΅
Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...
"Never spread the lie in the headline" should be a hard rule of 21st century journalism.
Research shows that repeating lies helps to spread them, and people read headlines more than they read stories.
When a travelling doctor questioned why a patient had been receiving dangerous cancer treatments for 11 years, he set off a chain of events that would divide a city and implicate a beloved oncologist in a string of suspicious deaths.

The acting CDC Director has no knowledge, training or experience in science/public health. Trump has no knowledge, training or experience in science/public health.
Both are calling to make the MMR vaccine into 3 separate shots, which makes absolutely no scientific or public health sense.

The entire "free speech on campus" moral panic was manufactured to blackmail us into making space in intellectual life for bigots and charlatans who couldn't get there on their own merits. Its a DEI scheme for fascism. Congratulations to everyone who took it at face value.
Are you rich and want to read beautifully crafted puff pieces about other rich people? Well, have I got the magazine for you!
It's not non-citizens bleeding our healthcare system. It's the profit-seeking entities (and the bureaucracy they create) who are leeching the system.
"My opinion is irrelevant" says the man enforcing his opinions on the health infrastructure of an entire nation
This is the result of a lot of people pretending racism is one of the greatest taboos in our culture while failing to address racism substantively. People are appalled by the idea of being called racist while being totally committed to upholding racism throughout society.
