I think everything we do with colleagues and students should begin by being personal.... Please help me welcome to the world our first grandbaby, Callie Ann! We will be counting everything and anything!! #ElemMathChat #ITeachMath

Early math skills are the biggest predictor of future math AND reading achievement. I explore all that I've been learning about Math Trajectories for Young Learners in my latest newsletter post. Check it out at: tinyurl.com/AERNewsletter1 #ElemMathChat
Thanks for hosting tonight, Kim!! Love everything you shared! #ElemMathChat
A7: I like to provide choice in how Ss represent their thinking. Then, during consolidation I will select two group's work and have Ss discuss what is the same and what is difference to help connect those representations. #ElemMathChat
A6: My favorite of those mentioned is double and halving. It can make some gnarly expressions so much more accessible. Imagine a student chugging through the algorithm for 1.5 x 18 when they could change it to be 3 x 9 for the same answer. Crazy powerful! #ElemMathChat
A5: I would want there always to be manips Ss were familiar with on tables under the NPVS. When Ss build I would also want them to draw a representation the board to connect those 2 representations. #ElemMathChat
WOW! What a resource! #ElemMathChat
You betcha!! #ElemMathChat
A2b: If I could rule the world, Ss would have baggies of manips within arm's reach at all times at all grades. It's not a "need" to use them. It is a choice to engage visually with a task. #ElemMathChat
A2: Making Ss thinking visible models for the Ss how their thinking can be modeled so they can do it themselves. Plus, it provides access for others to track the thinking in ways they may not have thought of themselves. We can develop more sophisticated strats by modeling them for all. #ElemMathChat
A1: My favorite visual models are Cuisenaire Rods, Open Number lines, area models, rekenreks, 100 beaded numberlines, non-labeled fraction tiles, and pattern blocks. #ElemMathChat
It helps that I'm in CT here. The 9pm EST is just so late for my weary bones.Ha!
Hi everyone! I'm Ann Elise who lives in Manchester, NH but is in Madison, WI until her first grandbaby is born probably next week. #ElemMathChat
#ElemMathChat Sounds fun!

Our first grandbaby should arrive in Feb!!! JOY for sure!
Happy New Year, Sue!
Thanks for organizing this for the math ed community! You are amazing!!! #ElemMathChat

I meet so many Ts and Ss who think that the area model is only done with the partial products broken down by place value rather than being a model that can show so many flexible strategies. I love double and halving! It feels like a superpower sometimes! #ElemMathChat
Wow! Time sure does fly during #ElemMathChat. Here's the last one for the night! Which solution, the blue or green match the way this story is written? How do you know?
I wonder how many students would try to find a common denominator, convert both, and then add to see if the sum was over, under or the same? I heard Amy Lucenta once say we want Ss to contemplate before they calculate. #ElemMathChat
