You don't *need* to understand the hobby this way, but it's by far the easiest way to explain to people the concept of TTRPGs in general.
Why are you gatekeeping people enjoying themselves? I think Pathfinder is the best system created, and it's even more paperwork intensive than 5e.
I like the mechanical depth, I like the flavor depth, I like the support provided by Paizo (and EVEN WOTC) for GMs running these systems.
This is great and all, but having a cultural icon like 5e just makes getting people into it that much better. When you say D&D, most people have a vague understanding of what it is you're talking about. The fact it stands as a monolith in culture means we can use it to get people into TTRPGs.
Basically always. Like yeah, I agree, 5e kinda sucks, but people can play it if they want. I actually like the fact it's so simple that you can make a character in like 5 minutes. Great way to introduce people to TTRPGs!
