A French colleague shared that he was looking forward to eating crepes tonight for Candlemas today and asked if any of us had traditions for it. And I, as the only American in the room, had to be like, "Well, ours is a little weird but..."

Really cool! It lived up to my expectations and was a fascinating place to be for a few months (even if particle/theoretical physicists can be a bit out there sometimes. That was part of the fun tbh)

I don’t teach; I have an MSc in science communication and work mostly for intergovernmental science organisations in Europe (but not CERN anymore. I was only there for four months)

Yeah, just because something is true doesn’t make it intuitive or easy to understand, in this case precisely because things at that scale work so differently from at our macro scale.

(As context, at the time we were specifically talking about teaching students to read Feynman diagrams)

My first week at CERN I went to a lecture on particle physics education where they explained that the high schoolers will struggle with the idea that particles can be emitted before they are absorbed.

And all the physicists nodded as if they had never before realised that was a difficult thought.

We're happy to join ISC and other fellow affiliated bodies in standing up for global climate-change research.

Space research is key for understanding how our planet is changing, so reductions in funding will have lasting impacts on decision-making, including adaptation and mitigation strategies.

But you will not improve them by gutting public services, leaving the EU or trying to be a European Trump. This is a gem of a place where we’re lucky to live; let’s keep it that way!

Bernard Foing, of COSPAR SC B and PEX, has been busy in the run-up to the Symposium! Last week he promoted COSPAR at the 25th CIEP in Shanghai, China.

There he had the chance to help strengthen connections between China and the global space community, and to catch up with friends of COSPAR.

I hate that in 2025 the only way I can get help from a large corporation for a non-standard problem is to be mean to their AI chatbot until it panics and connects me to a human.

Am I mean to customer service when it’s a human? No.

Do I have to be when customer service is a chatbot? Yes.
