Clio Reframed aims to explore historical writing and historiography produced by women between the sixteenth and mid-eighteenth centuries, asking why, when and to what purpose and effect women chose different historical subjects as their focus; to situate these texts within their social, religious, political, and textual production contexts, with the aim of expanding our critical understanding of historical writing that often elides the participation of women; and to challenge narratives that homogenize women’s interests in history and their writing strategies. It proposes that women’s historical writing is not an essentially gendered or isolated space in which individual contributions and agendas are uniform. Rather, women’s historical writing is diverse, prevalent, and characterized by relational frameworks and networks, involving other writers, patrons, stationers, and readers.

I hear it's National Handwriting Day! My research relies on those individuals who spent most of their days with a pen in their hand and, presumably, ink all over their fingers. Thanks to the neat letters, the messy annotations, the lazy inkblots, the cursory crossses, and all of the doodles. 🪶

I've considered editing it down into an article (or two?), but I could never muster the enthusiasm to return to the project. Perhaps now is the time? Well, not now but post-PhD...?

It's hard to believe that I completed my MPhil three years ago now. For reasons I can't remember, I opted to have it embargoed...but today, it's lifted! If anyone is interested in the literary legacy of the first secular song book printed in Scotland (1662) then this is your lucky day! 🎶

It is Hogmanay in 1944. Granpaw receives a telegram in the close of 10 Glebe Street. Chaos ensues with the Broons quarrelling about who their first foot should be. The rival first foots form a queue at the Broons' door. Then, Granpaw appears with Hen and Joe, who have been given leave from the army. He intercepted a telegram, mind? A final, sublimely couthy, ensemble frame shows the family and their friends celebrating. *moist eyes*

The Broons story for the Hogmanay of 1944 is a masterpiece of Scots art which surpasses anything by Raeburn, Naysmith or the Colourists. This is a hill that I will die upon.
