In July 2022, the County Council committed to develop a public realm improvement scheme for Mill Road.
We know that a scheme will benefit both local residents and traders, and have substantial local support.
So where is it? Please sign the petition!

MR4P with Cllr Jan French & Matt Wright (project manager) on Thursday in March town centre. We learnt loads about the Β£multi-million pound public realm transformation there. Takeaway #1: strong political leadership required!

It's great to have events like this which bring together people from all parts of our community, young and old, to celebrate and have fun together!
Huge thanks to the lovely people in Love Mill Road for the excellent Summer Shindig they put on in Romsey Rec on Sunday. We know it will have taken a lot of hard work to put it together.
Blue badge holders are exempt from Mill Road bridge motor vehicle restrictions.

We'd love to see more zebra crossing and raised tables (the bits that continue the pavement over the road). @transportforall.org.uk has shown these would benefit disabled people hugely, but if we reasonably adjust our streets, everyone benefits.

And Chris Whitty reminds us that cycling is, in fact, a perfectly normal thing to do, a perfectly healthy thing to do, and a cheap form of transport. No lycra necessary. (Or cycle helmets, IMO. Shhhh!!!)

12 mayors commit themselves to a 'national active travel network', including our own Paul Bristow π. This is brilliant. We have at least four primary schools within walking distance of Mill Road.

Chart 11: Proportion of pedestrian casualties by IMD decile of casualty home postcode, by age, 2019 to 2023 (England only)
Chart of who owns the cars on our streets. Ten columns with poorest households owning 1/5th as many cars as highest income households
A damning pair of charts.
People on lowest incomes own FIVE TIMES fewer cars than the richest do.
Meanwhile kids in most deprived areas are FIVE TIMES more likely to be injured by cars.

reduces noise pollution, another significant factor in the decline of wildlife in our cities. Trees can lower the temperature of their immediate environment by several degrees. That's going to be really important when summers are ever more scorching. Our streetscape plans help all urban life.
also need to mitigate/adapt to climate change. Our suggestions help this, too.
With more greenery, we have more insects. That increases our beleaguered bird populations. We need to think about light, because man-made light has a negative impact on birds and mammals. Reducing traffic, however, π§΅

A few days ago, we posted our ideas for improving the streetscape. We talked in human terms, and the pictures show happy people getting on with living. But these streetscape improvement would benefit more species than just the human one, and humansπ§΅

Breaking news! @sportengland.bsky.social's #ActiveLivesSurvey shows that walking for leisure has increased by 6.8%. That's over 3 million adults in England who are walking more! But thereβs clearly a need for safer, more pleasant streets, as fewer people are walking for travel. πΆββοΈπΆββοΈ
