Whereas in my experience, Guthrie can do all of the technical shreddy playing, as well as mimic other similarly skilled virtuosos effortlessly, whilst improvising over complicated Jazz harmony.

He’s truly fluent in music, if that makes sense. A real guitarist’s guitarist x3

It’s hard to compare skill directly above a certain threshold, but the way I see it: Buckethead is an amazing performer and very technically proficient, but a lot of his work that impresses people tends to boil down to flashy gimmicks - which puts him in the same camp as Eddie Van Halen, to be fair!

Every guitarist should check out Guthrie Govan at least once! IMO he’s arguably the best guitarist alive right now from both a technical *and* musical standpoint, as much as he would deny that x3

Standouts: Waves, Wonderful Slippery Thing, Ner Ner

I’ve been a fan of Jonathan Young’s covers for a while, but his first originals album truly slaps. Crazy blend of synthy pop vibes with power metal and djent cliches and some truly inspired jazzy harmony and songwriting

Standouts: Best Band In The Universe, Army Of Tigers, Starship Velociraptor

Niche pull, but the guys from Fellowship are lovely and their brand of ‘wholesome power metal’ is really needed in this day and age, with all the power metal cheese that comes with it :3

Standouts: Atlas, Scars and Shrapnel Wounds, Saint Beyond The River

This feels like cheating a little bit, but Epica have done the only Attack On Titan covers that I feel genuinely surpass the original openings. There’s so much excellent music from Epica though, the choir they use is so intense!

Dragonforce is the band that made me pick up guitar and start listening to metal, and while ZP Theart’s vocals still give me chills, I reckon Maximum Overload is the most balanced DF album overall and is peak Hudson-era writing imo :3

Standouts: Three Hammers, Symphony Of The Night, Ring Of Fire x3

Crush 40 is probably the first band I actually became a true fan of, long before I became a musician and or got into metal properly. Dunno if compilation albums count but either way I love me some Johnny Gioeli and Jun Senoue :3

Standouts: [Insert Sonic track], Revvin’ Up, Watch Me Fly, Fire Woman

Standouts: Isolation, All Hope Is Gone, Life Must Go On

Brothers of Metal are another fantastic modern band, love the slightly tongue-in-cheek but also wholly sincere energy they bring :D
Emblas Saga is another all-bangers album imo, followed closely by Prophecy of Ragnarök

Standouts: Powersnake, Hel, Theft of the Hammer

I could honestly listen to this whole album on repeat for days on end, every song is a banger. Battle Beast in general are a fantastic modern power metal band, Noora’s vocals still give me chills 💜

Standouts: Circus Of Doom, Eye of the Storm, The Place That We Call Home

Amaranthe are a more recent addition, and I honestly think they killed it with their first album! Definitely need to listen to more of them though :3

Standouts: The Nexus, Burn With Me, Electroheart

I decided I’d do one album per artist, and I’m already struggling to pick one with Alter Bridge. Could have easily chosen Blackbird or Fortress, but I’d be lying if AB III didn’t have me by the throat as a teenager x3
