SCOOP: Brian Daboll privately fought to not go 2-8
I know, I know, I know.... I know Gavin Newsom has a lot of flaws and he would not have been my pick for champion against trump, but he's giving me such catharsis right now
Whatβs a technology that you think is overhyped? Iβm going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry. Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you donβt actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points thereβs an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto. Itβs not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, itβs that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. Thatβs key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

We see a fair amount of criticism of "administrative bloat" in higher ed. Feels like we should be talking at least as much about technology bloat, if not technology capture
DOJ escalates its attacks on judges who rule against Trump
Our viral front page today was very simple. We told the facts about Donald Trump, a man who doesn't like the facts π

MAYOR OF LONDON The absolutely harrowing scenes of suffering in Gaza are being made worse by the day, with no sign of the crisis abating. Starving children searching hopelessly for food in the rubble. Family members shot dead by Israeli soldiers as they search for aid. In heartbreaking scenes, innocent lives are being torn apart before the eyes of the world. The international community - including our own government - must do far more to pressure the Israeli government to stop this horrific, senseless killing and let vital life-saving aid in. Nothing justifies the actions of the Israeli government. The UK must immediately recognise Palestinian statehood. There can be no two state solution if there is no viable state left to call Palestine. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan
London mayor Sadiq Khan, one of the most powerful Labour politicians in the country, has called on the UK government to immediately recognise the Palestinian state.
When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.
SanseitΕ, one of Japan's far-right parties, is expected to overperform in the upcoming Upper House elections. How has it built up its base? Mainly by taking a page out of US President Donald Trumpβs fascist playbook - i.e., by lying about immigrants.

Trump Urges Supporters To Move On From Societal Disdain For Pedophilia
New bombshell from my investigators on Epstein's sex trafficking operation: the Trump administration has an Epstein file detailing 4,725 wire transfers and almost $1.1 billion flowing through just one of his banks. Hundreds of millions more through others.
Ahh, our two regional ally groups deciding to cut deals with each other that we're not included in. I can't handle this much winning.
Wolff: I remember once, when I was at Mar-a-Lago to do a sit-down interview, his aides asked for a rough outline of what I wanted to talk about. I had a lot of subjects, but I also said Epstein.
And they told me, βIf you ask about that, heβll just stop the interview and you wonβt get anything.β
If universities truly wanted to push back against antisemitism, racism, and misogyny, they'd "divest from X": stop posting, delete X buttons on uni web pages, etc.
Why haven't most left X? Institutional inertia, yes, but also a fear of far-right backlash. Rufo is living rent-free in admins' heads.
UNITED FARMWORKERS
Jamie Alanis died from an ICE farmworkers raid on Thursday.
The violent disregard for their fellow man is heartbreaking.
xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved
Perhaps training an AI on hate filled crap from deranged posters on X isn't actually a good idea?

Graph showing that the US has the highest incarceration rate among founding NATO countries.
A grim reminder this 4th of July: The US has the highest incarceration rate of any independent democracy on Earth, making it a leader in mass incarceration.
Far too many people are locked up in the βland of the free.β

I donβt think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.
This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.
It is setting up to make whatβs happening now look like childβs play. And people are disappearing.

Day 214 of protests.
Hakeem Jeffries has taken $1,742,105 from the pro-Israel lobby, soβinstead of spending his time fighting the authoritarian takeover of this countryβhe is on TV helping spread lies about Zohran Mamdani.
Jeffries does not serve the people, nor is he an opposition leader.
Heβs a part of the problem.
Itβs 2AM on a Sunday and Iβm heading to the Capitol to FORCE a full reading of the Republicansβ 940-page bill.
This bill will rip health care coverage away from 16 million people and cut food assistance.
Itβs sick. And we will not stand for it.
