I know, I know, I know.... I know Gavin Newsom has a lot of flaws and he would not have been my pick for champion against trump, but he's giving me such catharsis right now

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

We see a fair amount of criticism of "administrative bloat" in higher ed. Feels like we should be talking at least as much about technology bloat, if not technology capture

MAYOR OF LONDON
The absolutely harrowing scenes of suffering in Gaza are being made worse by the day, with no sign of the crisis abating. Starving children searching hopelessly for food in the rubble.
Family members shot dead by Israeli soldiers as they search for aid. In heartbreaking scenes, innocent lives are being torn apart before the eyes of the world.
The international community - including our own government - must do far more to pressure the Israeli government to stop this horrific, senseless killing and let vital life-saving aid in.
Nothing justifies the actions of the Israeli government.
The UK must immediately recognise Palestinian statehood. There can be no two state solution if there is no viable state left to call Palestine.

London mayor Sadiq Khan, one of the most powerful Labour politicians in the country, has called on the UK government to immediately recognise the Palestinian state.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

Sanseitō: How The Far Right Party is Bringing MAGA Tactics to Japan - Unseen Japan The party is using Trump-like tactics to single out foreigners living in Japan. Will voters reward it at the polls?

Sanseitō, one of Japan's far-right parties, is expected to overperform in the upcoming Upper House elections. How has it built up its base? Mainly by taking a page out of US President Donald Trump’s fascist playbook - i.e., by lying about immigrants.

This Democrat Won’t Let Go of the Jeffrey Epstein Case, Either

New bombshell from my investigators on Epstein's sex trafficking operation: the Trump administration has an Epstein file detailing 4,725 wire transfers and almost $1.1 billion flowing through just one of his banks. Hundreds of millions more through others.

Wolff: I remember once, when I was at Mar-a-Lago to do a sit-down interview, his aides asked for a rough outline of what I wanted to talk about. I had a lot of subjects, but I also said Epstein.

And they told me, β€œIf you ask about that, he’ll just stop the interview and you won’t get anything.”

If universities truly wanted to push back against antisemitism, racism, and misogyny, they'd "divest from X": stop posting, delete X buttons on uni web pages, etc.

Why haven't most left X? Institutional inertia, yes, but also a fear of far-right backlash. Rufo is living rent-free in admins' heads.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

Hakeem Jeffries has taken $1,742,105 from the pro-Israel lobby, soβ€”instead of spending his time fighting the authoritarian takeover of this countryβ€”he is on TV helping spread lies about Zohran Mamdani.

Jeffries does not serve the people, nor is he an opposition leader.

He’s a part of the problem.

It’s 2AM on a Sunday and I’m heading to the Capitol to FORCE a full reading of the Republicans’ 940-page bill.

This bill will rip health care coverage away from 16 million people and cut food assistance.

It’s sick. And we will not stand for it.
