This sort of thinking, of course, completely overlooks the role of when, where and to whom a person is born. Or of the rule of law, public infrastructure, government contracts (Hi, Elon) and other support for entrepreneurs that tempers the "individual genius" narrative.
People who make it to the top and feel guilty, have imposter syndrome or simply don't want to acknowledge the role of chance and good fortune in their success can comfort themselves by saying "I did this all on my own; why do you need a handout?"
Taxes and government spending on programs for those left behind by capitalism also constitute a tacit acknowledgement that billionaires, while often brilliant and hardworking, also are lucky and benefitted from public goods. That they're not as special as they believe themselves to be.
