Does this mean next time I come to Venice I bring maple syrup for Monica and currants for you?
I love the juxtaposition of glass mosaic and concrete in this garden wall at Fondazione Querini Stampalia. Carlo Scarpa's attention to detail and his use of local techniques and materials always fascinates me.
Yikes. As we say in Canada.
No, but I'll see you this afternoon at 4pm and you can tell me about it!
Well, that answered a couple of questions! Thanks Gregory. I was pretty sure I was looking at the carpark and I've thought once or twice that I should visit that church.
Where is this, Caroline? And when is the tour?
@pgjonesvenice.bsky.social and @davidhewson.com Perhaps you can get Venice Noir added to this poster next year!
My favourite place in Venice.
I just had coffee with a very knowledgeable opera critic/musicologist who has heard her conduct and says she's dreadful. So the musicians are right to protest both the process by which she was chosen, and the appointment itself.
And it's only March! Wait until summer. Barricades by then?
Now Italy has adopted paying by phone, but unlike in North America there's no option to add a tip. This is going to dramatically reduce the income of waiters as Americans realize they "can't" tip and many of them couldn't calculate a percentage if their lives depended on it.
I walked by here yesterday. A group of young people were standing around watching while a young man jumped, trying to grab a stem of mimosa. I edited him out of the picture! And if I ever come in to serious money I'm going to hire an agent to see if I can buy that house!
I spent ten years as a child on the outskirts of Maidstone, and remember bluebells rather than daffodils. But I do remember the Kentish Men/Men of Kent distinction though it was Maids.
Remember 2022? I remember an Italian joke at the time: only three more British Prime Ministers before Christmas.
I walked past the Farmacia Morelli and my heart sank. Venice is down to 47,568 residents? That's a 5% drop since I was here in April last year. If I could afford to buy an apartment, live here, engage with the community, become fluent and so on, I'm not Venetian. I'd not be preserving the culture.
Oh, too bad.
And today it's definitely sweater weather!
Starting with "b" it's a Canadian word for guest quarters over the boat house.

I remember one day in mid-October when the temperature dropped to 16C. I put on a sweater and went out, only to find Venetians all bundled up. It must have been the weekend of the big seasonal wardrobe switch!
Even the Venetians? Or are they still in their puffer coats?
