D.C. closed 200 encampments in the last two years
In 2025, D.C. closed 109 homeless encampments. The year before, that number was 99. Street Sense digs into the data and city reports.
D.C. closed 200 encampments in 2024 and 2025 combined. But the issue of unsheltered homelessness persists. An analysis of D.C. data showed some of the challenges to addressing homelessness and why advocates say encampment clearings don't work. streetsensemedia.org/article/200-...

Flurry of encampment closures scheduled, cancelled for weather
A majority of the encampment closures were ultimately cancelled or rescheduled due to weather or residents moving before the clearing date.
I wrote this piece back in January when D.C. scheduled 25 encampments at the start of the month. While most were cancelled because of freezing temps, the number of scheduled clearings was a sharp rise from previous months. streetsensemedia.org/article/enca...

And DHS, the agency that administers the program, says there's not enough money.
