some thoughts on Alysaβs gold medal skate a day later
- this is maybe my absolute favorite skating performance ever? I know enough to understand itβs not the most challenging technical skate but the sheer infectious joy is unmatched
- Iβve watched this maybe 15 times
- I mean holy shit look at it
The thing about carceral thinking is that people foreclose their imaginations and think the only thing we can *do* is arrest, prosecute, imprison bad actors.
Meanwhile progressive Minneapolis council members and organizers got an eviction moratorium resolution passed unanimously yesterday!
My friends local to Minnesota, whom I trust a great deal, would like to share the following resources that could use support.

2025 was the year AI hit hard in education after a long lead in
If anyone's left with a job in the social sciences and humanities to keep studying it critically in the future, here's a reading list I've been compilung all year to get you going
A new investigation revealed that school districts and local governments are reportedly overpaying for supplies because of Amazon contracts that bind them to dynamic pricing.
Rather than allow for competitive bidding, the deals βcovertly raise prices and inflate costs for governments.β
Keep in mind that many of those who DO keep their coverage initially will only be able to do so for a few months before having to drop it due to the increased premiumsβ¦but the losses being spread out over several months will dilute the media narrative.
βThe memo, obtained by The New York Times and not publicly released, did not provide details such as the ages of the childrenβ¦β
and yet they lead with a baby pic.
To further cover their tracks and assuage their conscience they apply for and are awarded institutional awards in mentorship (and even an NIH grant to study mentorship!) in calculated attempts to convince themselves and their colleagues that they arenβt the problem.

The incredible, indomitable, inspirational Alice Wong has left us.
I'm so grateful to have known her on social media, and so grateful for all the words she shared with us and all the actions she encouraged us into making.
May we live up to her example.
(so you don't have to go to Instagram)
Letting a computer make decisions is letting whoever controls the computer decide the range of acceptable choices. There is no way that the owners of the AI systems will allow them to make decisions which are optimal for the user but against the interests of the owner...

"Trad influencers gloss this unjust workload as a homage to homesteading (and leverage it to market unsubstantiated remedies) instead of calling it what it is: picking up the stateβs slack. Cuts to education seem less threatening when you are convinced your role is to homeschool your children" #NCEd
In her recommendation, Bagdasarian stated, "Any person over the age of six months without contraindication who has not received a dose of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved or-authorized 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine may be considered to have an underlying condition that puts them at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 and is thus eligible to receive an age-appropriate dose."
I like this. Since under RFK Jr, Covid shots are now for people with underlying conditions that put them at risk, Michiganβs chief medical executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian states that not having the most recent Covid shot constitutes such an underlying condition.

I also struggle with this.
One of my solutions: kebabs. I eat meat so I do chicken, fish, but minimize steak. Buy them at most grocery meat markets. You can grill them as is or more often I take them off skewer for a very fast stir fry. That plus a rotisserie chicken and sliced zucchini in fridge

This post is a real gift.
The strategy:
1. Appeal to economic anxiety created by AI hype.
2. Target prospective students in geographic regions far removed from established tech centers.
3. Rent brand equity of public universities associated with regional pride, while simultaneously sowing doubt in the their legitimacy.
I know we don't feel like there's much to celebrate this July 4th. It's been a rough several years.
So I want to talk about how we're making history right now.
Routine immunization of U.S. children born 1994β2018 will prevent an estimated 419Β million illnesses, 936,000 deaths, and $1.9Β trillion in societal costs over their lifetimes.
Newer vaccines like HPV are on track to reduce cervical cancers by tens of thousands of cases...
In 2016, I worried that the US would soon be destroyed. So for the next eight years, I took my kids everywhere I could so they'd know their country firsthand. We drove in every direction to see things from all sides.

If you need a dairy-free scone recipe, this one is great. I didnβt have blueberries or lemon on hand, so I swapped in allergen free chocolate chips, and was hilariously shocked at how well it turned out.
