Warming and farming hasten bird losses across North America, study shows
Warming and intensive farming are accelerating bird population declines across North America, a new Science study finds, with major risks for ecosystems and human well-being.
After decades of steep declines, North America’s birds disappearing faster than ever.
• Populations shrinking across most of continent.
• Intensive agriculture largest role in accelerating losses.
• Impacts wildlife, #ecosystems, human well-being.

2️⃣ While the study in @pnas.org shows most of the coastline remains stable (for now), in three decades the ice sheet has retreated from the grounding line (where continental ice meets the ocean) at an average rate of 442 sqkm per year, mostly in West Antarctica.

The intense upwelling of the last few weeks has collapsed as trade winds failed again. One possible reason is the Bermuda high is weak and positioned east than is needed to drive the pressure gradient that sets up wind-jet upwelling in the Gulf of Panama, although this idea needs further exploration

It's not as if the Mail and other legacy media have disappeared. X, Meta, Substack etc - a new generation of bigoted billionaire channels - have not replaced the old but are laid on top of it. What we see is that with such tools in their hands, the oligarchs can fool most people, most of the time.

Graphic shows three line graph time series of monthly carbon dioxide abundance in ppm (blue line), monthly methane abundance in ppb (red line), and monthly nitrous oxide in ppb (purple line). Graphs are all shown from January 1984 through January 2026/October 2025. Current levels of CO2 are 429 ppm. Current levels of methane are 1946 ppb. Current levels of nitrous oxide are 339 ppb. All graphs show long-term increasing trends along with some interannual variability and seasonality.
Greenhouse gas concentrations keep rising. The planet keeps warming in response. And that added heat shows up in the extremes and impacts. This is really basic stuff.

Ice velocity on Jakobshavn Glacier in Greenland, 2014–2024
This map, based on Copernicus Sentinel-1 data, shows the speed at which ice is moving horizontally on the Jakobshavn Glacier in Greenland. Half-way up the western coast of Greenland, it is one of the fastest outlet glaciers in the world with velocities reaching, at times, up to 50 m per day.
Sentinel-1’s year-round acquisitions of the ice sheet's marginal zones, along with dedicated winter mapping campaigns that include the interior ice sheet, enable the production of annual ice sheet-wide velocity maps. These maps are derived using offset tracking, a data analysis technique that compares satellite images of the same location at different times to ‘track’ ground movement.

Ice flow velocity on the Antarctic ice sheet, 2014–2024
This map, based on Copernicus Sentinel-1 data, shows the speed at which ice is moving horizontally on the Antarctic ice sheet.
The study shows rapid flow of ice on Antarctica, with ice flows moving at speeds of between 1 m and 15 m per day. Regions shown on the map include the Antarctic Peninsula and Alexander Island, as well as large parts of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Most of the coastal areas were captured at either six or 12-day intervals.

The study shows rapid flow of ice, moving at average speeds of up to 15 m per day, from glaciers and ice sheets at points around the Greenland Ice Sheet. Half-way up the western coast of Greenland, Sermeq Kujalleq (also known as the Jakobshavn Glacier), is one of the fastest outlet glaciers in the world with velocities reaching, at times, up to 50 m per day. The North-East Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS), is also clearly visible and begins far inland at the ‘ice divide’, shown as a dark blue band of nearly stagnant ice in Greenland’s interior.

In a sane world, this would be front page news everywhere.
But it will hardly be covered anywhere.
The North Pacific Ocean surface warmed over twice as much over the past 15 years than it did over the preceding 156 years.
That's an increase in warming rate of >2000%!

“Did you know that wood brning is the most polluting way to heat your home? This #CleanAirNight share the uncomfortable truth about wood burning.” Text is next to an illustration of a fire with smoke and pollution particles coming off of it. At the bottom are the logos for Clean Air Night, Global Action Plan and Impact on Urban Health, next to the reference “UK Government Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs, 2025”.
Breathing in air pollution from wood burning increases your risk of heart and lung disease, asthma, diabetes and dementia. Even homes with newer “Ecodesign” wood burners are three times more polluted than those without.
This #CleanAirNight, share the facts about wood burning.
