Today Komiža on the island of Vis celebrates St Nicholas (locally called Mikula), the protector of sailors and fishermen. Every 6 Dec an old wooden boat is burned in front of the hilltop church of St Nicholas — a powerful ritual of gratitude, renewal, and respect for the sea. 🔥⛵️🌊

What a shame—a missed opportunity for great television! This is Nepos Street in Split (Diocletian’s Palace), where Julius Nepos, the last Western Roman emperor, was apparently murdered.

I find that the general public often imagines Romans only in 1st-c. BCE/CE military gear. So when a documentary puts someone in a late 4th-c. CE uniform and still calls them “Roman,” it’s confusing. Anyway… if Julius Nepos isn’t in it, I’m not watching.

Underwater research near Pašman island 🇭🇷 reveals new Neolithic site (ca. 4700 BC) with dry-stone structures and wooden piles ~5 m below sea level—evidence of Holocene shoreline shifts and early Adriatic settlement. The second submerged Neolithic site in Dalmatia after Soline on Korčula. #archaeology
