This is assuming a 9 inning game... if it goes to extra innings, then Italy could give up a 5th run (or up to 0.6 runs per extra inning played beyond that)

If Mexico wins and scores 4 or fewer runs, US is out
If Mexico wins and scores 5+ runs, Italy is out
If Mexico doesn't win, Mexico is out
I think it’s probably to nullify the effect one blowout game on the calculation… discourage running it up or sandbagging
The innings thing I figure is more to reduce the chance of ties… if you’re dealing with a bunch of mercy rules its unlikely innings will be a material factor
I wouldn’t say it penalizes you necessarily. It just doesn’t help you against team C if you hung a whooping on team B

It effectively is. When you’re comparing one teams allowed to anothers in common games, it boils down to run differential
