Features of App-journey networks may thus represent a novel target for future research and intervention. All code is publicly available online: github.com/georgiaturne...
In contrast, time spent on one's phone was not significantly related to mental health. Therefore, transition patterns across different technology activities may have clinical relevance beyond time spent or specific activities engaged with.
Additionally, Apps which users report using more automatically are more central in App-journey networks.
Features of these networks describe transition patterns across Apps, abstracting away from which specific Apps are used. These network features relate to user mental health: users with better mental health have higher modularity and lower density, suggesting they journey less randomly across Apps.
We developed a novel network analysis method to investigate this. 'App-journey networks' quantify the patterns by which users transition across Apps in a phone use session, directly from real-world phone use data.

What if the relationship between smartphone use and mental health depends not just on specific harmful or beneficial activities, but also on how users transition between activities?

This weekend, I'm going on a sponsored walk to help raise money for my friend's younger brother's cancer treatment. If able, I'd really appreciate if you could share or sponsor me here: sites.google.com/view/alex-wa...
Looks really good thank you! π
Amazing, thanks so much :)
Thanks so much, looks great!
This looks perfect - thanks so much!
π‘Does anyone have any good go-to introductory readings / materials for network analysis? e.g. introducing definitions of nodes / edges / global and local graph properties, etc? π
Thanks so much! Would love to chat and hear more
Thank you π we wanted to argue that regulation increases the overall freedom of the research community to progress scientific knowledge using transparent evidence. As you point out, it also limits certain research practices (e.g. publishing in nontransparent ways), which is no bad thing

In the 2020 Election Project, Meta collaborated w/ academics to study how FB impacts elections.
β¬οΈ @aanixel.bsky.social, @fassiluisa.bsky.social & I argue that such research collaborations, w/ clear conflicts of interest, should be regulated. Would love to hear thoughts!π¬

Huge congratulations, so well deserved - so happy for you!! π₯³
I have t1 diabetes and have always wondered why my glucose levels go so high on days which *should* be stressful (eg exams) but when I actually feel unexpectedly calm⦠this explains it and will be so helpful for clinical care too!
Important work on perceived social media addiction π
π¨Friends, weβre happy to share that our book is available for pre-order! π
We aimed to cover all the foundations of the topic in an accessible manner for a large audience.
It could help set up a bachelor-level curriculum on the topic.
Pre-orders are very key for the fate of books: shorturl.at/Dxbif
Looking forward to speaking tomorrow at the Cambridge University Behavioural Insights Student Society about the psychology of social media - come along if you're in Cambridge!

This is one of the rare papers that completely changed my thinking about the field I work in. Have a read!
