Gosh, what a full day I've had. Many small adventures. I left a venue in Elm Row at 17:48 thinking I had to be at another venue in Dalry at 18:30 only to realise I had to be there at 18:00 and nine people were waiting for me to bring printed materials. I cycled the three miles in 14 minutes.

The author, glowing with exertion on the tram home from a long run.
Manchester Marathon training week 12/18 complete. 5 runs, taking 6h55m covering 44.5 miles. Today I took the bus up to the hills and ran a half marathon distance at marathon pace down to the coast, taking the tram back. I ran so fast that all my hair apparently slipped to the back of my head.

It was fantastic, because I'd borrowed "Ceremony" and "Procession" in 1982 and not heard them since, finally owned "Blue Monday" and heard "State of the Nation" for the first time. It all sounded so clean and sharp.

I think the first CDs I bought, in Autumn 1988, were:
The Dark Side of the Moon
A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Outrider (J. Page)
Wind & Wuthering
Seconds Out
The Whole Story
Substance
Force Majeure

Sunny afternoon, so I took a late '80s Tangerine Dream playlist out for my very gently run. Dreamy nostalgia, remembering learning about "Neuromancer" and "The Handmaid's Tale" on Usenet at work, and buying my first CD player with my first month's graduate salary.

I hated the change to regular uniform order, and the inconsistency between their cub packs and mine. And the total lack of explanation for what Thinking Day was.

This World Book Day thing, going to school dressed differently, has unearthed a memory from primary school in the seventies when some of the kids came in their Brownie or Cub uniforms, saying it was Thinking Day. I was a cub and had never heard of it, which caused unpleasant dissonance.

Running is a very affordable way to exercise. Until you become obsessed with doing it "better". My 50-minute tempo session today involved the consumption of drinks and gels that would have cost Β£9.16 if I'd paid RRP for them. AND IT WAS WORTH IT.

No one else at school would be able to visually recognise any character from a book I'd read, so it would be a bit pointless. "Why are you wearing a space suit, David?" "I'm Chris Godfrey from 'Blast Off At Woomera' by Hugh Walters, sir."

I remember trying to order this from the local newsagent but I'd missed this issue. It's a vivid reminder of how hard I'd try to get a magazine with some pictures in from DW. That was a big deal then. Now I just think "Sorenson with lippy looks like David Walliams."

Paul Heiney from off of "That's Life" looking like a Vulcan with a bouffant.
I was going to say that Colin had been caught looking like "That's Life"-era Paul Heiney in in that picture, but having looked to check that I'm talking about the right one of Esther's Boys, I'm delighted to see that he's become a Vulcan in his retirement.

Cover of the novelisation of the unmade Doctor Who serial "The Nightmare Fair" featuring the words "Space Mountain" on the cover.
Was it this, I wonder? Was the event named after a feature in an unmade story? There had after all been a fanzine called "Shada" a decade earlier, edited by a prince amongst men and featuring the best and brightest up and coming young contributors....
It's quite a design, this cover, isn't it?
