I agree. Multiple reasons to encourage natural tree regeneration on appropriate sites but in some sites (eg wet acidic moorlands where inc. evapotranspiration through trees dries the soil, allowing organic matter to decompose perhaps) then one of these benefits may not be inc. carbon storage
