I usually use pale sand and white as a light layer on top of that.

You'll also likely want a few star player models - the balance for stunty players being a bit rubbish is they aren't worth much. If your team is worth less than your opponent's you can buy inducements to balance things out.
For your gnomes you will want two treemen which are a separate purchase to the team box.
And don't feel obliged to buy GW models unless you're playing at a GW venue. Blood Bowl is blessed with a vibrant 3rd party model scene.
There are online resources you can't use too. They don't have the full rules but it's a convenient place to look up a lot of things.
