The highlight of my day. I was really rooting for the Osprey.

Who do I know in geology outreach/public engagement? My son (11) and his friends would like an Ask a Geologist service on zoom where they show you interesting rocks they have found, and you tell them what they are.

I say this every time de-extinction comes up: it makes no sense to devote science to bringing back extinct animals when we can’t be bothered to keep extant ones alive in the first place.

That polar bear arm though... Possibly broken? That might give the puma an advantage. #TeamMurderMittens #2025MMM

Neither bracket did well tonight: heart 4/8 and head 5/8. Rough bracket night all around, but especially for the pelican... #2025MMM

Only Ones division wreaked some havoc on my brackets. Heart - 5 (but effectively broken; damn mustelids); Head - 7. #2025MMM #INeverPickTheRightUpsets #IfItDoesntBreakItIsntAHeartBracket

It worked out pretty well! Recommend. The columns were a little tricky to set up but worked like a charm after that. :)

Okay, I think I have a better setup with deck.blue for tonight. One column for the official list, one for the hashtag, and one for @mmmletsgo.bsky.social. 🤞🤞

Ooops. Yes, I meant deck.blue. I only logged in 10 minutes before the battle so I haven't had time to play with it. :/🤞 If anyone finds something better, let me know.

There is a blue.deck. Similar to the old TweetDeck. I haven't figured it out yet but I'm hoping it helps.

#2025MMM is starting off with the usual bang. Current score: Head - 0, Heart -1.

And so begins the destruction of my carefully planned brackets....

Seymour Skinner is working with a telescope near Bart Simpson talking about science. Skinner's dialogue is modified to talk about #2025MMM

"Ah there’s nothing more exciting that March Mammal Madness!
You get all the fun of paying attention, reading guidelines, doing research, arguing from evidence, thinking contingently, waiting for carnage.

If you're a scientist that serves on an NSF panel that got cancelled today, I'd love to talk to you about it for an NPR story. DM, email or reach out on signal.

Current go-tos: Dungeon Crawl Classics for that chaotic old-school feel, Coyote and Crow - from an indigenous indie developer that is a futuristic, alternate history, post apocalyptic and a current group fav, and for one-shot fun Honey Heist.

My very last issue (on ♿️) has now come out with BMJ Medical Humanities: I have stepped down from my role as Editor in Chief. There are a lot of factors—after 17 years editing two consecutive journals, it was time. But there’s more, and I feel we should talk about the climate of #academic publishing

Question for the bird experts: we have a window-adjacent and very busy bird feeder with a variety of PNW clients.

In light of potential issues with bird flu, are there any changes or considerations you’d recommend? It’s fairly close to the house. Pic of our most raucous client for tax.

Giant Rats In Tiny Vests Trained To Sniff Out Illegally Trafficked Wildlife This brings a whole new meaning to getting ratted out.

Researchers have successfully trained African giant pouched rats to sniff out illegally traded animal parts and alert their handlers. The rats were taught to remember the scents of elephant ivory, rhino horn, and pangolin scales against background scents. https://buff.ly/3AMu5OZ
