I wasn't aware of the strike until after I'd done Tuesday's, so my streak is still active until it marks Wednesday as incomplete.

But I don't cross picket lines.

My oldest son (working in Santa Clara County) said it was much busier than expected early on. I didn't get a chance to talk to him on his lunch break.

Tweet: Can anyone explain to this confused Italian living in the US what is up with Philadelphia and Gritty?? Is he their daimon?
Response: I believe he's the manifestation of their city as a god, like Roma.

Sunnyvale decided they liked them enough that they closed Murphy Avenue to vehicle traffic permanently.

But, that's one small street in a very car-centric urban area.

It's fascinating how many right-wing types keep saying their lives are in danger if the Democrats win.

How many times has Ted Nugent said he won't survive a Democratic presidency now? It's at least a couple.

My co-worker spent hours trying to track down a book that a patron had asked about, going through all our interlibrary loan resources. Nothing.

Turns out the patron had asked ChatGPT for book recs and it made up some titles and summaries. The book did not exist.

Idea I got from a health coach many years ago - instead of (or in addition to) journaling, take a picture of every meal. It saves trying to work out portion sizes and details like that, and gives a visual overview for things like "is there any color in your diet, or is it all brown?"

The moment I realized I disliked him was when his campaign helped push a Republican onto the general election ballot in 2018 so that Newsom would have a guaranteed win.

I'm pretty down on Adam Schiff for similar at the moment, TBH, but I'll still vote for him over Garvey.

In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: The police, who commit crimes, and the mayor, who commits crimes.

I've seen "adjudicated rapist" used. He has been judicially declared to be a rapist but has not been convicted of such in a criminal trial.

Picked up the Zebra Sarasa vintage color packs from Jetpens. I don’t think any will replace Uni Signo blue-black as my daily driver but nice to have the variety.

It was never a place we went regularly, but there were a couple years in the early 2010s where my family went to Sea World and then got dinner at Chick-Fil-A afterwards. It's been fascinating to watch how the relative unacceptability of those has changed over the years.

See also: the part of the 'sports book in tribal casinos' proposition from a couple years back that also gave the tribal casinos (or anyone else) PAGA rights to enforce gambling laws in non-tribal casinos and card rooms.

I don't remember where I saw it, but "Hypocrisy is virtue-signaling for the right" was one of those *mind blown* ideas.

That was, in fact, the point of them. Especially in states added after the early 1800s, there is a kind of baked-in distrust of government and the ease of ballot propositions is a part of that.

I'm not saying this is a good thing, necessarily, but it can be a useful safety valve.

As an example, several states have propositions on the ballot this year to explicitly add abortion rights to the state constitution, overruling Republican legislatures and courts. There have also been propositions to fight gerrymandering, with mixed success.

A lot of states (California among them) have relatively easy paths to the ballot for statewide propositions. These include things like amendments to the state constitution. This is intended to give the citizens a path to overrule the legislature or otherwise force changes. >>

Also - Californians will all have, at minimum, 15 items on their ballot this year. President, two Senate races due to stupid rules, US Representative, State Assembly, and 10 propositions. Half the state also has a State Senate election. Plus any local races - education board, mayor, local bonds.
