Showtime!
Will Trump/MAGA let us get it though?
They're not super common. I've only seen a couple in 3 years of birding Montrose. Now is is good time though because the burn exposes them where normally they would be hidden in the tall grasses.
Let us know if you get the part!

Went into the gym with a feels like of 14C walked out of the gym all sweaty with a feels like of 4C. Good thing it is just a 6 min. walk for me. Brrrrr!
Controlled burning being done. A meadow with fire burning grasses. A park district worker walking on the concrete revetments just beyond the meadow with a backtank and sprayer of whatever they use to ignite the fire. Lake Michigan in the background.
Sandhill Cranes kettling over the Fishhook Pier for about a minute before resuming their trip north along the lake edge. I wouldn't have expected that relatively small amount of concrete to be able to produce a thermal updraft but I guess it did!
A couple more shots

The black marble eyes of Barred Owl giving me a cold alien stare from deep inside the dense thickets of the Forbidden Zone at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary
A juvenile Bald Eagle that probably popped in to check out the controlled burn and see if rabbits were running from the fires.
Luke, the leucistic Common Grackle, hunting in the leaves.
Not even close to my best photos from yesterday at Montrose but I feel like I have to get some up before I burst and/or collapse from selecting. 3.9.2026

I have an awful lot of photos to edit and I am so tired I am broken but my goodness today was a spectacular birding day at Montrose! I NEEDED THIS SO MUCH because everthing!
Textured black-and-white mural of bearded Black man's head in profile, on red brick building. In the foreground, just entering the frame, is a bearded white man. His bright blue coat adds a pop of color to the image.

It's also a bit of "Won't someone rid me of this turbulent priest?"
Here comes the squeeze!
Pretty much a copy of Hitler's ill fated Battle of Britain decision which ultimately only strengthened the resolve a country that was in pretty full retreat and on the edge of defeat by Hitler's much more powerful and capable military.
The US is currently attempting to bomb a country into submission with pretty much nearly indiscriminate bombing that is hitting civilian, infrastructure and military targets in the belief that it will break the population's morale and topple government.
The U.S. will become an atavistic amusement park for the rest of civilized world to visit when they want to have a dark holiday of illicit bad life if it stays on its current trajectory. The ads will be "come eat food that will kill you, breathe air filled with pollution, shoot guns, drive ICE cars"
This is such a pathetically weak settlement.

I don't drink coffee so I don't care about that at all. It is just they are cutting back the premium pastries in the US while keeping them in some foreign markets. They cost cut to the bone in the US because US consumers just have to take it and accept inferior offerings because ... they do!
Starbucks is phasing out the Princi brand of premium Italian baked goods from most of its U.S. and China Reserve locations, reversing a partnership initiated in 2016 to elevate food offerings. While standalone Princi bakeries closed in 2021, Princi products will remain available at select, high-end Starbucks Reserve Roastery locations. Nation's Restaurant News +3 Key Details on Princi at Starbucks: The Partnership: Starbucks became a licensee and investor in Princi, an artisanal Italian bakery founded by Rocco Princi, to supply high-quality food to its premium stores. Locations: Princi items were introduced in Starbucks Reserve Roasteries (Seattle, Shanghai, New York, Milan, Tokyo) and, for a time, standalone Princi cafes. Current Status: As of late 2024, Starbucks is removing the specific "Princi" branding and products from many Reserve stores as part of a strategic shift, although the Roasteries in Milan and Tokyo are expected to continue offering them. Menu: Offerings included artisan breads, focaccia, pizzas, pastries, and salads. Starbucks Coffee +4 The decision to phase out the brand was made to address sales performance. it The Japan Times
There is a really fascinating trend of US corporations treating American consumers like crap while treating their other customers around the world much better. I'm pissed about this particular one because I really loved the Prince chocolate tarte slice and the chocolate tartalete that replaced it.
