(5) Wrinkles is unique that it tells a movie about characters not often seen in animated movies. It feels like a lighthearted tale about 2 friends in a seniors home, but as age creeps up the drama becomes more present. Masterful storytelling.
(4) Only Yesterday is a character study that alternates between youth and adulthood. The stories may seem unconnected but they are all of a piece when looked at tonally and looking at what makes a person a person. If you open yourself to it, this movie is endlessly nourishing.
(3) Liz and the Blue Bits is remarkably restrained. While A Silent Voice is powerful it also plays into a lot of ancient me plotting and cliches so it always feels like a cartoon to me. Itโs one of taste, but I prefer the subtle character work here.
(2) Iโve written about the powerful Itโs such a Beautiful Day many times on this page. There is more nuance and emotion from these stock figures as we explore (an unnamed) mental illness. The end is one of the most emotional and life affirming scenes in any film.
(1) First we have the lovely film Ethel and Ernest. Based on Raymond Briggs novel about his parents and their life. A great deal of historical drama and strongly observed details make this a warm blanket of a movie.
5 animated projects where the characters feel like real people. Whether by the writing or animation, the complexity of humanity comes through and no note feels false (partly inspired by the exceptional Journal with Witch anime), in alphabetical orderโฆ
(4) There are other versions. The 2 main ones I am missing are the original black and white show, which is dated but an interesting curio. The CGI 2009 movie looks fine, but is quite bland. Itโs not even bad enough to be interesting.
(3) Astro Boy 2003 is the best family version of Astro Boy. Itโs easy to find online so prepare to be marvelled by the fluid cel drawn animation. Itโs episodic television but it still tackles issues and has some complexity for a kids show. The best distillation of Astro Boy out there.
(2) 2 and 1 are essentially tied In quality, so I put Pluto here because it is a reimagining. A darker tale than other Astro Boy projects, this limited series is a dense exciting limited series from the writer of Monster. The 1st episode is a significantly highlight. A.
My ranking: Top 3 Astro Boy projects. All 3 Of these are quite good, dependent on your tastes. At 3 I have Astro Boy 1980. Itโs retro anime and the storytelling and animation is much of that era. Itโs light and low stakes storytelling. Sometimes a little repetitive bit watch a few eps for fun. B-
I find it best if I understand the impulses behind my paintings but not necessarily the โmeaningโ. Lately my little abstracted creatures are turning into islands. It feels correct to life right now.
I think thatโs what gets me. They feel like real people. Not a false moment.
Flawed and wonderful characters and full of quiet well observed moments without resorting to cheap melodrama. The writing, acting and directing of this show is brilliant. Up there with Only Yesterday or Bocchi The Rock. A+
There are still a few episodes left, but I think Journal With Witch may be my favourite slice of life anime showโฆ ever? At the very least it is the one where the characters feel so real and I am completely invested in their stories and relationshipsโฆ
The amazing Animation Obsessive newsletter provided a Youtube link to last yearโs very charming under seen film from China โNobodyโ. Watch it while you can. youtu.be/BaFyvWjEyJQ
Yeah. They SHOULD have known, but they didnโt.
1) the director of INSIDE OUT wants you to believe movies are โjust entertainmentโ with nothing to say. Anyone offended by a family with 2 dads or a kid with a pink bike (what was cut from Elio) is a homophobic shithead and you shouldnโt make movies to appease them. Kids arenโt born hateful.
From Kodansha's "Light Hole" papercraft stop-motion branded film, featuring Akira, Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell and many other mangas.
Directed by Toru Katori (Animation director: Takuro Oishi).

The smart people who are Trump supporters are in on the grift.
โฆ I hope Pixar keeps this up. Stanton doing Toy Story 5 is encouraging. I hope Shi has more creative control over her next project.
The reason Hoppers is so exciting for Pixar is that despite always being films made by committees Pixar always work best when films feel auteur driven. My least favourite Pixar films you can see the formula. Incredibles feels like Bird, Turning Red like Shi, and Hoppers feels like Chongโฆ
Itโs really good!!! Hey, what if Pixar just made something really entertaining and VERY funny. I hope people support this gem.
A Penguins Memory: A tale of happiness is a 1985 anime about a cartoon penguinโs battle with PTSD following the Vietnam War. You think it will be silly but itโs actually very well done and affecting. Heres the whole thing on YouTube youtu.be/fk3UfjQ7d-Q

It was you! Thank you.
I have found so much hard to find stuff on Tubi. Not just anime but international films and hard to find animation. I havenโt really explored Retrocrush.
My apologies to whoever shared this with me the other day. I saw it and didnโt respond and now canโt find it. Thank you for sharing it. I finally watched it, and it is indeed wonderful. youtu.be/ucRulNQsuYQ
Yeah, it's imperfect. Ultimately these things are just about discovery. There's a few here I haven't seen. Don't read the comments. They just get into the weeds about the rules.
(2) Having said that, All the movies on the list are excellent. Itโs a great resource to fill out missing gaps you might have.
