Looking for alternatives to Mills for my Intro class, and am going to try a short essay from Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass called "The Gift of Strawberries." In talking about the gift economy vs. property economy, she sketches the two-way relationship between humans and society!

then you review them as a class, and facilitate the conversation around how to go about bringing those things to reality. it's also interesting to work with students who resist the activity even tho they are clear about who they admire and why. it can expose some important blocks to surpass
I like this idea, and then I tack on the "dream CV" exercise. so students look to someone they admire who is 5-7 years ahead of them, and study what their path has been. then they write their own cv w/ pubs, positions, grants, etc. that they want as if they've already happened

Just realized it's the first year since '22 that I won't be setting off in April for field work in Europe. Feeling so so grateful that Yale and the Macmillan Center sponsored my research. Studying the ways people imagine nationalism, citizenry, and religion thru tourism is more important than ever!
