Oh so sad!

I made my coffee this morning with cold water. I put water in the electric kettle, walked away for a bit, then poured it over my coffee. I did not turn the kettle on. This was very disappointing.

I swear when i got up the high was 60, now it's 80?!

AESTHETICS OF THE OPPRESSED 15 THE SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD The theatre usually conjugates reality in the Present Tense of the Indicative Mood – ‘I do’. TV and advertising use the Imperative Mood – ‘Do!’ In the Theatre of the Oppressed, reality is conjugated in the Subjunctive Mood, in two tenses: the Past Imperfect – ‘what if I were doing that?’ – or the Future – ‘what if I were to do this?’ In our work with peasants fighting for land to cultivate, or with young people undergoing punishment in correctional establishments, in poor communities, with people with physical or mental disabilities, with factory workers or domestic servants, or whoever – we have to be Subjunctive. Everything should be ‘what if’, because everything can come to be. Subjunctive – that’s the word! The Subjunctive Theatre must be accompanied by the Legislative Theatre37 so that the knowledge acquired during the theatrical work can be extrapolated into laws and juridical actions, or by Invisible Theatre, to intervene directly in reality. Or by the prosecution of oppressor-offenders to get some moral and/or financial reparation for the victims or to bring to people’s attention the issue you want to deal with, or by a Concrete Action, which changes things in the immediate future, plunging straight into reality, like a workers’ strike, the occupation of a piece of unproductive land, etc. The Subjunctive Method is the reinstatement of doubt as the seed of certainties. It is the comparison, discovery and counterposition of possibilities, not of a single certainty set against another, which we have in reserve. It is the construction of diverse models of future action for a particular given situation, enabling their evaluation and study. We should never say, ‘Do this or that!’, but rather, ‘If we did this or that, how would it be?’ Even when the participants in our programmes do something really fine and admirable, we should still ask for more alternatives: what if it was different, how would that be?
