Viewers can decide which of the other forms they think is the "woman" and which is the "bird," but Miró rarely codified his visual language for others. Just a year before this work was painted, Miró stated: "For me, a form is never something abstract⦠It is always a sign for something."
His "Woman, Bird and Star" is currently on view, and it features some elements of his visual language. Painted on burlap, the most recognizable motif is the large asterisk of a star at right.
Some may classify MirΓ³ as a Surrealist, or perhaps associate him with other movements of the time, but he developed a visual language all his own, full of biomorphic shapes and poetic symbolism.
Joan MirΓ³ was a Spanish and Catalan artist who is primarily known for his vivid and colorful work filled with dreamlike imagery.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we wanted to spotlight a few Hispanic artists on view in our Collection! Next up: Joan MirΓ³.
