Yes, republicans logged more total votes, and will likely still win the runoff.

But besides the optics, keeping a Republican from getting past the 50% post and leaving the seat vacant longer is a real win.

A Democrat wins a plurality of the votes for Marjorie Taylor Greene’s former seat. Whoa.

Every $0.18 not under the control of this administration is an $0.18 well spent though.

Help the enemy and yet still only lower the price of a gallon of gas by (checks notes from 1993) a whopping 5%? No brainer.

If I was driving I-66 alone from the Beltway to the Pentagon tomorrow at 8:30AM, VDOT estimates that it would collect $42 from me. DC has no interest in drinking some of that milkshake? bsky.app/profile/maus...

Oh HELLO.

TIL that this report considered a scenario that included South Arlington! And that only 16% of workers driving to this study area earned less than $75K.

There’s still a designated person who’s been granted the authority to press the β€˜yes’ button for every single contract. They know that if a contract is bad, they don’t sign it. Those people have had their numbers reduced, but the signature warrant requirement has not been abolished.

But I sat through way too many trainings telling me about all the many ways I could go to prison for writing or signing a bad contract. And none of those stories sounded as remotely corrupt and wasteful as these recent ones.

The thing that gets my Fed bureaucrat fists curling is that career warranted contracting officers are signing these corrupt and flawed contracts. I hope they aren’t the only ones to get sanctioned.

External comms in particular at most Fed agencies are now mostly directed by non-career staff.

And as with all these sorts of opposing voices coming from β€œinside the house,” the response is:

It’s great that ___ works for you, but the rest of us want ___ that works for everyone. You can stay on the sidelines, or hopefully open your mind. But if you keep opposing, we’ll leave you behind.

The "e-bikes are cheating" trope is just "protected bike lanes are unnecessary because I rode all over the place without them" for a new era: A mix of gatekeeping and survivorship bias that allows the person invoking it to defend their perceived status.

Its unpopularity is not b/c it’s incorrect, it’s that people on the margins trying to get by in this broken system get disproportionately punished when costs rise.

Many people disgust me, sadly including some with whom I share some common interests. I hate that there are people who ride bikes who think like this, and are then stupid enough to say it out loud.

It’s also a bit sad to see The Atlantic devolve into The Actually, a sad patronizing chronicle of tsk-tsking contrarianism about every damn thing.

We subscribed during Covid for Ed Yong’s clear and compassionate writing. And that didn’t last long, obviously.
