Epic commute to city. Booked to change to Ember for Dundee from Bridge of Cally. Snow at Glenshee meant bus got stuck. Plan B next local bus from hotel one hour later after a couple of refreshments by the fire. Next Ember in Dundee delayed. Now on ScotRail express with only one stop to Haymarket.πŸ‘

Cycle commuters in 2026 could use an e-bike answering all the too hard / too sweaty / too oily critics. Or register with a Voi type bike hire scheme.
So much choice now and many cities have a few safe routes built.

This demonstrates that the vote to rip out the modal filters and other active travel measures in the Braid estate was not only unjustifiable, but also arrived at by a tainted process which must now surely be revisited.

cover page of new Spokes Favourite Bike Rides booklet, with photos of some of the rides inside

A taster page from the booklet - favourite ride from Balerno to Fountainbridge, with photos of the entrant, the colinton tunnel, and a map

3 A Beeline to the City
11 km, 7 miles 40–60 minutes E
This is a straightforward route, suitable for cyclists of all abilities. The surfaces are good, navigation is
simple, there is no traffic to worry about and the going is almost completely level. It’s worth lingering in
the Colinton Tunnel to view the impressive murals.
Start: Balerno End: Fountainbridge
From Bridge Road, take the signposted Water of Leith path
(NCN 75), which starts near Balerno High School. Follow
the path for about 7 km as it meanders alongside the
river. You will pass Spylaw Park (on your right), then go
under the City Bypass and through the Colinton Tunnel.
The path eventually leaves the Water of Leith, crossing
the Lanark Road by a footbridge before dropping down to
the Union Canal towpath.
With the canal on your right, take the towpath (still NCN
75) for a further 4 km to its terminus at Fountainbridge.
(Care is needed when crossing the Slateford Aqueduct.
Cyclists are very strongly advised to dismount on this
narrow section of path; those with a poor head for heights may prefer to avoid it completely.)

Gregor Steele
Gregor came back to cycling after he
retired. He enjoys leisurely rides in
the country, which he says fit in with
his other hobbies: photography and
local history. He is also a writer and
poet, and does a lot of his composing
while riding.
Why this is my favourite ride:
This is a journey
to be enjoyed at
a leisurely pace.
There is beauty
to be found all
along the route,
but for me the
highlight is
the Colinton
Tunnel, with its
famous murals.
I have passed through it many times,
but always find something new.

The thread about the coming of the Union Canal, what became of its β€œPorts” and why its bridges moved around Prior to the coming of the Union Canal into neighbourhood of Fountainbridge in the 1820s, it was little changed from medieval times, a quiet suburb on the outskirts of the city in a pastoral settin…

Was actually the 1920's when the bridge was moved. This is history from the excellent @threadinburgh.scot with images and maps of the Fountainbridge area.

On way back from LB shop we were treated to the Leamington Lift Bridge in action. Locals will know that it was 'recycled' from the Fountainbridge crossing after the canal was shortened in 1930s(?)

Big load out to west of city this morning. Used the new cycleway to Roseburn and then followed Water of Leith path. All smooth which is a help when your Urban Arrow tops 100kg. On way pack we had a look at the Dalry infra. Only let down by the 'non link' to canal.

On Ember e-bus to Dundee and Aberdeen north. Arrived Edinbirgh Airport Terminal and picked up a lot of passengers! Connected transport works - even though we shouldn't make flying easier. ScotRail did have plans to have station here but looks like the bus and M90 + A90 will take the strain (or not)

Cycling Scotland data report...

In Edinburgh, a growing network of cycle lanes is also seeing more people choosing to travel by bike.

Over the 48-hour survey period, traffic surveys recorded 4,744 bikes on Leith Walk. This was out of a total of 48,832 travel methods recorded, meaning that 9.7% of people cycled their journey – the highest cycling modal share yet seen on the route.

On the western-most portion of the new City Centre West East Link (CCWEL), at West Coates in Roseburn, 2,798 bikes were recorded over the same 48-hour survey period. This was out of a total of 30,175 travel methods recorded on the street, equating to 9.3% of journeys being made by bike – a new record cycling modal share for this section of route.

At York Place, where the new CCWEL protected cycle route connects to Leith Walk via Picardy Place, 1,921 cycle journeys were recorded over the two-day period. This is the largest number of bikes yet recorded at this location by a Cycling Scotland traffic survey and evidence of the growth in cycling being supported as routes join together.
