It always pays to read the footnotes.
According to Sumerian myth and various king lists which the Sumerians put together over the centuries, Enmerkar was the legendary king who built Uruk and was its first (or second) king.
(He also invented writing, fwiw.)
In the footnote about his name--
want to follow the news but can't bear thinking about ordinary Iranians, who've been stuck under such an oppressive regime for so long, who maybe got a flicker of hope, briefly, a few months ago, then watched in horror as their friends and relatives got killed by the state, and now this, unspeakable

Daily Mail + I'm trapped and under attack in Dubai - while back home in Chichester my daughters are furious, the labradoodles are sick and, worst of all, I left my Mounjaro pen in the fridge.
We donβt do the Daily Mail, except in those very rare circumstances when they print something so ridiculous we just have to put it up here. And today is one of those days.
it may not be the one you are looking for, but Ted Chiang wrote a classic on this topic for the New Yorker: www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-...
Rising ocean temps blamed for massive die-off of marine life. "Researchers examined the year-to-year change of 33,000 [fish] populations in the northern hemisphere.... They found the drop in biomass from chronic heating to be as high as 19.8% in a single year." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I don't know how that triggered a moderation warning, but great video. We're so lucky to have the otter around!

Note that unemployment is increasing as net migration is plummeting. Especially young people who are meant to be most at risk from migrant labour.
I'm not saying they are connected. In fact, that's the point. The nativist argument always was that migration meant unemployment.
Well, maybe not...

I'll say it again. The last 20 minutes of Casablanca is the best last 20 minutes of any film ever.
It's absolutely perfect.
#TCMParty #Casablanca
I remember a grim work night out when a colleague tried to make conversation by asking for everyone's favourite film. I was laughed at for saying Casablanca (which noone else has seen). A colleague's suggestion of Norbit was deemed acceptable though
Wonderful to see the fabulous outdoor photography exhibition by Carolyn Mendelsohn in Bradford city centre yesterday. π
Excitement mounts as the potato queue stretches out the Exhibition building
Samosa!!!! π€ͺ
Potato browsing. The crowds had thinned considerably by this point
The amazing insanity that is Saltaire's annual WYOG Potato day. A heady mix of sharp elbowed crowds, over excitement and potatoes. All washed down with tea and a huge quantity of amazing Samosa. An annual highlight!

Yet another classic from the archives: First Ali G and now this. Staines has never recovered.
Over the weekend the government consultation on earned settlement crossed my feed thanks to @jdportes.bsky.social and @danielsohege.bsky.social. Filling it out made me very sad. So sad that I've written something far too long (as usual) but if you'd like to read them they're here.
300,000 children face 10-year wait for settled status under UK plans, says IPPR
The consultation closes on Thursday. What is being proposed is dreadful. Can I encourage you to engage with the consultation and put your dissent on record?
aldokt Winter Olympics 2026 10h Iβm sorry, the shooting/skiing relay has just finished and the I think the commentator said that the woman that crossed the line for gold had been shunned for years by her team mates as she STOLE ONE OF THEIR CREDIT CARDS AND SPENT THEIR MONEY. Come on- thereβs a Netflix in that surely?? Do I need to make the calls myself??
booooouuuuuuuuuuuuuh 4h Julia Simon was accused last year by her teammate Justine Braisaz Bouchet (and other staff members) of stealing their credit card During pre-season, there was the trial and Simon confessed Because of that, she was suspended for the first few races of the biathlon season Also, another athlete was taken out of the season for tampering with a team mate rifle So yeah, I can't imagine the atmosphere in the french team right now π¬
*Runs in *
There is genuine French biathlon drama!
