GitHub - erikdarlingdata/PerformanceStudio: SQL Server execution plan analyzer — cross-platform CLI and desktop GUI SQL Server execution plan analyzer — cross-platform CLI and desktop GUI - erikdarlingdata/PerformanceStudio

You know how you're trying to use SQL Server Management Studio to tune performance? There's a new Performance Studio instead from Erik Darling: github.com/erikdarlingd... In its infancy, it already looks pretty useful and more relevant than SSMS (again, for query tuning only though - not managing.)

Logical Reads Aren’t Repeatable on Columnstore Indexes. (sigh) Sometimes I really hate my job. Forever now, FOREVER, it's been a standard thing where I can say, "When you're measuring storage performance during index and query tuning, you should always use logical reads, not physical reads, because logical reads are repeatable, and physical reads aren't. Physical reads can change based on what's in cache, what other queries are running at the time, your SQL Server edition, and whether you're getting read-ahead reads.

For 3 years now, using SESSION_CONTEXT in SQL Server has either given you incorrect results, crashes, or single-threaded queries, depending on which workaround you pick: www.sqlfingers.com/2026/03/sess...

It's unbelievable how much of that crap is out there, and the more accessible AI tools become, the more "contributors" we're going to see.

I’m Not Gonna Waste Time Debunking Crap on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is full of absolute trash these days. Just flat out bullshit garbage. (Oh yeah, that - this post should probably come with a language disclaimer, because this stuff makes me mad.) People wanna look impressive without actually putting in the work to gain real knowledge. They're asking ChatGPT to write viral "expertise" knowledge posts for them, and they're publishing this slop without so much as testing it.

Why would you use Microsoft SQL Server over Postgres? Well, Postgres guru Bruce Momjian has a good presentation of features that are still missing, and it's fair and open: momjian.us/main/writing... Most of that stuff is already built into MSSQL.

I’ve Been Using Macs for 20 Years. Here’s What You Wanted to Know. tl;dr - It's easier because I've always chosen to run SQL Server VMs, so it was easier for me to switch than you might expect - but if you're a Microsoft IT pro, I don't recommend switching. Now for the long version. About 20 years ago, back in 2006, I excitedly blogged that my boss at the time had agreed to let me buy a Mac (with my employer's money.) I'd been really frustrated with Windows for quite a while at that point.

Is Oracle-Compatible Postgres Actually Useful? A migration case with only a JAR and no source code shows why Oracle syntax compatibility is not always a fake requirement, and how IvorySQL + Pigsty can absorb legacy debt at low cost.

Oh. I don’t know if I’ve ever actually come out publicly, SQL people.

Yeah, I’m pansexual (and juuuuuust a smidge genderqueer).

No, not kidding.

Yes, it took me a LONG-ASS TIME to figure that out.

So, yeah. I thought y’all might maybe oughta know.
