Tacoma hosts the region’s largest ICE detention center, but city rules adopted nearly a decade ago prevent its expansion. The center’s operating contract expired in September 2025, and details about a new agreement remain unclear.

Seattle approves a 1-yr ban on new ICE detention centers and plans a permanent prohibition after the moratorium expires. The move follows a growing trend across Washington, where Tukwila, SeaTac, Spokane, and King County have enacted similar measures. Pierce County's proposal is next week.
