โ€œGreen Islandsโ€ is a reference to how these waste sites were once identified. They are in Hanfordโ€™s 200 East & 200 West Areas & were colored green (on a map), located sporadically within burial trenches. Mixed waste was put here @ the burial grounds after Aug. 1987

The 300 Area Process Trenches operated from 1975 thru 1994 & received as much as 2.9 million gallons per day of contaminated wastewater from uranium fuel creation & several laboratories. Ecology approved its closure in 1998 but required long-term monitoring.

Women had different roles @ the Hanford Site. They would perform jobs such as secretaries, assistants & like the one in this image, working as โ€œdriverโ€ or โ€œmessengerโ€ girls. Considering the size of the site, this was a full-time job & took these drivers to different areas on site the same day. #TBT

March is Womenโ€™s History Month, a time to honor those women who have contributed to science, history & made an impact. One of those women was Leona Woods Marshal Libby, a physicist and was an instrumental piece in building the first nuclear reactor at Hanford.

Our unit of interest today is the Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF). It is a specially designed landfill on 202 acres in the 200 East Area of the Hanford Site. It is the permanent disposal site for vitrified low-activity waste from the Waste Treatment Plant.

During the mid-1980s, there was increasing public concern & scrutiny of environmental contamination @ Hanford. In response to Freedom of Information Act requests & public pressure, the federal govt released formally classified documents, beginning to unveil the long-standing secrecy @ the site.

Segregated calendars at the Hanford Site dictated access to activities, facilities and even certain jobs. Black community members used to gather at specific places tailored to African Americans only. The image shows how people created spaces for connection within their own communities. #TBT
