You probably heard the US admin is threatening to break up the National Center for Atmospheric Research: but did you know they already froze funding for the 9 regional Climate Science Adaptation Centers? From tracking invasives to helping tribes with drought, here's why the CASCs matter β¬οΈ
I'm in the South Florida Sun Sentinel talking about deep-sea mining!

Russ Vought (piss man) tweet about doing piss man shit: The National Science Foundation will be breaking up the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. This facility is one of the largest sources of climate alarmism in the country. A comprehensive review is underway & any vital activities such as weather research will be moved to another entity or location.
NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? π

It's hard to adequately summarize how destructive NOAA's 2026 proposed budget released on Monday is for hurricane forecasting, but I crammed all I could into today's newsletter. I encourage everyone with interests along the coast to read it carefully. β¬οΈ

US pioneers restoration of deep water corals damaged by countryβs worst oil spill
NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.
How bad will it be? Catastrophic.
Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.
But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.
Speak up now before it is too late.

DEFEND THE DEEP: Deep-sea mining could cause irreparable damage to our oceans, but the Trump administration is charging forward anyway without proper safeguards.

This week, scientists released the first video of a colossal squid in its natural habitat, filmed nearly 2,000 feet deep in the South Atlantic Ocean.
Dr. Kat Bolstad, who helped identify the squid, joins us to talk about the sighting.
After TMC's reckless and concerning decision to bypass international law and the ISA to push its mining agenda, there is no time to waste to protect the deep.
Urge your government to support a moratorium on #DeepSeaMining today! β‘οΈ defendthedeep.org

So, this is Sigmops elongatus or the elongated fangjaw. They are a type of bristlemouth which is the most abundant group of fishes on Earth. These guys live at depths of up to 1500m but come up to the surface at night to feed. They get around 20 cm or so and primarily feed on small crustaceans.
Anyways, searching for motivation I stumbled upon some pics I took of the deep-pelagic fish I worked with during my masters and thought Iβd shed some light on some of my favorites since my fascination with them is what inspired me to study the deep-sea

If #DeepSeaMining were to go ahead, destruction would not stop at the seafloor - the midwater zone, a vital ecosystem for marine life & climate regulation, would face threats from sediment plumes and wastewater discharge.
It's time to hit pause βΈοΈ

Earlier this year, a video of a gloriously creepy anglerfish inspired tears and poetry online. But why was this deep-sea dweller near the surface at all?
Calling it the "biggest deregulatory action in U.S. history," the EPA rolled out sweeping moves Wednesday aimed at walking back environmental protections and eliminating a host of climate change regulations, some decades in the making.
