The first time I saw Strictly Ballroom was in a little rural cinema with wood-backed cushions on the theatre seats. I laughed so hard, I doubled over then literally fell off my seat as the cushion tipped, slid and brought me down with it. (The seat snapped closed behind me as an encore.)

It’s right up there with: “I’ll get back to you.”

May I recommend Pete’s Castle near Craughwell? Not abandoned but cosy is a more viable alternative.

In Australia, I had a large version of this dude. His hat was a sieve, his face a bowl and he held the spoon!

Dorothy Dunnett’s Game of Kings. Friends advised persistence and so I persevered reluctantly. Then came that plot twist and the whole book changed for me.
