what kind of argument is that - you say a rock isn't conscious? then tell me how consciousness works.
i can't imagine some older bloke who can't turn the heating on in the winter because it is too expensive be swayed by Labour stopping puberty blockers (this largely interests trans people, their loved ones, and a few transphobes), he will likely care mostly about the heating
sounds like they are chasing voters rather than taking principled stances and convincing people. tbf most voters care about things that affect them - that would be the cost of living.
I'm sometimes terrified by just the stuff that is going on in human minds
everyone knows and nothing changes, largely because I need to publish in journals seen as "good" in order to get a job, or get promoted or later run a lab
journals could just hire reviewers from the fees paid
Amazing job!!! so exciting <3
How does the brain adapt to artificial body extensions over time?
With a wearable finger-extension device, we reveal distinct phases of proprioceptive plasticity: during wear, after active use, and even after removal.
Now in @elife.bsky.social:

The human body is remarkably adaptable, capable of integrating artificial enhancements from tools to prosthetic limbs.
Researchers have used finger extensions to test how the brain updates its expectations over time.

"If annual net migration were to be 200,000 lower on average than the OBRβs current assumption over the five years of its forecast, the cumulative 1mn hit to labour supply could add up to Β£20bn per year to forecast borrowing, the IFS noted."
hard to be brilliant if you spend your time being a raging misogynist.
i really hope the greens get all the "i am dissatisfied with the two major parties" votes, and not reform. a friend who works at nesta told me that some of reform's success seems to be because they opened lots of local offices in different parts of the UK, and really have their boots on the ground
yes. i wish they'd increase academics' pay to keep them from leaving ...
... i am like, why would there be widespread anger if they don't win? the majority would not have wanted them
The Epstein files document what many women researchers have long experienced but rarely seen laid bare so starkly: exclusion operating behind closed doors, shaping who gets funded, invited, mentored, and taken seriously. How many of these networks, norms, and gatekeepers remain in place?
these are few rejections
"Dear Dr [insert name], Greetings!"
this is the right ethno-nationalism
worst: melon. melon is water with a bit of melony taste then also durian, the stink fruit. best: something between strawberry and mango but I like lots of fruits
www.science.org/content/arti... i mean, in a way, we already hugely meddle with nature...
my phd colleagues and I dedicated our theses to anyone who was close to us during that time, academic or not... is this satirical or a real thing?
For anyone who has not seen it, my research, along with the suicide statistics he apparently tried to cover up, show very clearly that Streeting is NOT putting childrenβs safety first in any way whatsoever. Trans kids are very likely to to suffer trauma well into adulthood, if they make it that far.
Happy to announce this new preprint!
In it, we use info decomp (Ξ¦ID) on fMRI in Alzheimer's and MCI to explore how info-dynamic representations change.
AD saw big decreases in synergy ('deductive' information) and increases in redundancy.

her wife is desperately trying to raise the funds to prevent this. they have 48 hours before sheβs put on a plane and might never be able to return.

yeah, hm, if your flight is delayed because of the weather you can't get any compensation either, i am unsure they will get through with this
