Pleased to share new research from @victorialangwx.bsky.social that computes differences in air quality & GHG changes between heavy- and light-duty vehicle electrification scenarios. I.e., for our electric transition, which vehicle type should we prioritize w/ incentives? 🧪
doi.org/10.1088/2752...
As policymakers consider how to accelerate transportation electrification, a key opportunity lies in strategically focusing incentives and investments where they can deliver the greatest combined benefits for climate, health, and equity.
When evaluating light and heavy-duty electrification pathways, we find:
🚗 eLDV delivers larger total CO2 reductions, providing widespread climate benefits.
🚚 Electrifying 1 HDV yields 23× more NO2 reduction-based economic health benefits than a single LDV
I am excited to share that my latest paper has been accepted to IOP's Environmental Research: Health! This work investigates the question: Which electric vehicle adoption strategies deliver the greatest climate and health benefits, and to whom do those benefits flow?

It was announced today that I received Northwestern University's Presidential Fellowship- the most prestigious award given to doctoral students by the university. I’m deeply humbled to be included in such an inspiring group of scholars.
Victoria Lang's (@victorialangwx.bsky.social) community-inspired study, Assessing the air quality, public health, and equity implications of an Advanced Clean Trucks policy for Illinois, is now available open access for mass consumption journal.hep.com.cn/fesci/EN/10....
Having a soundbite on my local NPR station was not on my 2025 bingo card, but here we are! I'm thrilled that findings from our recent study are reaching more people and showing how emission reduction policies can lead to tangible benefits for Chicago communities.

Spent a rewarding day volunteering at the Northern IL Food bank with my daughter and many of my neighbors, prepping food for 144 local pantries. Amid so much uncertainty, it feels good to spend our time doing something tangible-by coming together, giving back, and supporting our local community.
Key Findings:
🔹 MHDV NO₂ pollution causes 1,330 premature deaths & 1,580 new pediatric asthma cases each year.
🔹 The ACT would convert ~48% of MHDVs to zero-emission by 2050.
🔹 This translates to 500 fewer deaths & 600 fewer asthma cases, with the greatest benefits in overburdened neighborhoods.
(left) Census-tract level attributable mortality rates of premature all-cause mortality (per 100,000, 30 years and older) from simulated annualized annual changes in NO2. (right) Census-tract level majority and super majority demographic composition.
🚛✨ Excited to share our new paper— a demonstration of community-driven science in action!
We partnered with local community groups to assess the benefits of Illinois adopting the ACT rule, which phases in zero-emission medium- & heavy-duty vehicles

Amidst the backdrop of self-inflicted terrible times for U.S. scientific progress, personnel, and leadership, some knowledge creation continues. Pleased to share Victoria Lang's (@victorialangwx.bsky.social) study on ACT adoption in IL: doi.org/10.1007/s117... 🚚🚚🚚
Honored to see our work featured in the Chicago Tribune! Our study, built on community partnerships, shows how the ACT can cut pollution and bring cleaner, more equitable air quality to Chicago. With the ACT rule now before the Illinois Pollution Control Board, the findings could not be more timely.
Great job @victorialangwx.bsky.social, this research is the information we need!!!
Stricter truck pollution rule would prevent 500 deaths a year in Chicago region, study shows www.chicagotribune.com/2025/03/18/i...
Just published in Environmental Science and Technology! In this study, we evaluate the consistency of four high-resolution vehicle emission datasets and discuss how uncertainty in emission estimates may impact downstream equity analysis.

This is my fourth year participating in Letters to a Pre-Scientist. Today I'm writing to my especially curious pen pal. Despite the whirlwind of my own emotions, sharing the love of science with kids and hoping to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals is giving me a glimmer of hope. 💌
Lately, I’ve become even more grateful for friends who choose to show up and catch up while channeling energy into positive change through volunteering.
