This Year Taught Me Compassion The past few years have been difficult for me, having faced self-disappointment on several fronts.

"Looking back, it’s so easy to say I should have made better choices. And indeed, wisdom is about anticipating the contingencies of life. But all the anxieties I carried this year, trying to anticipate everything, left me paralyzed rather than at peace."

But with hope, you walk through a valley of darkness and fear no evil. And there's something to be grateful for in that

In my conversation with my spiritual director, I realized that my resistance to gratitude is related to my complicated relationship with #hope.

Without hope, without the expectation of temporal and eternal salvation, how could we be grateful for the pain and failures of the present moment?

Last week's RDL was about #gratitude. It was straightforward until I got to the part asking if I was grateful for pain and failures. Naturally, I was not. How could anyone ever be thankful for that? I asked my spiritual director about the line between mindful gratitude and #self-delusion.

Finished with Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Read it for its philosophical content, but I was too much of a literalist to understand it unaided.

One thing I learned from #Arendt is that pluralism is a fact of life. People come from a multitude of perspectives, and this is unavoidable. To believe that we could somehow reach a monolithic view is a delusion. The way forward is to manage these differences without compromising action.

“As he thought about his life, he felt both tears and mockery welling up inside him. All that lay before him was madness or suicide. He walked down the darkening street alone, determined now to wait for the destiny that would come to annihilate him.”

This is especially relevant for the #Philippines, whose NGOs are built into the participatory mechanisms from national to local government.

Did Jephthah Actually Kill his Daughter? - TheTorah.com The story of Jephthah’s daughter is famous as an example of child sacrifice in the Bible, but is that really what the verses mean? The biblical text leaves a number of clues that imply that the Bible ...

This week I learned about Jephthah’s daughter and the possibility that his father sacrificed her to God.

Grateful that there are scholars in the internet who willingly explain difficult stories like these.
