True. The shortcut I use is that I assume everything they say is a lie, and I'm right about 90 % of the time. Good enough. If they say it, I expect the opposite is probably closer to correct, and while admittedly this lacks rigor it keeps my from spending all my time down a wonkish rabbit hole.

We're in the same mess here - healthy, wealthy state that can't balance a budget😡. Makes no sense. Assuming you've combed the budget for waste, fraud, and boondoggle pork, then clean up the tax code and raise the progression on the upper brackets and capital gains till it balances.
