FWIW I guess I could be talking nonsense though - 16 years later the only memory I have from that careers event is the "lethality engineer" anecdote. And that's because so many of us found it obscene.

Well, yes, I agree! But I think there's something about the word being less frequently used with general audiences that makes it feel a bit "cleaner", for now, at least.
Back in 2009 at a recruitment event in the physics department a missile producer was advertising for "lethality engineers". These kind of euphemistic weasel words always remind me of George Carlin's skit on soft lanauge: youtu.be/h67k9eEw9AY?...
That's a particularly excellent figure!
Looking for a research post in #SpaceWeather #DataAssimilation? We have an open opportunity with only 4 more days until the application submission deadline!
If you're interesting in applying for research fellowships with the University of Reading to research weather, climate or space physics, come along to our fellows day -- 7 May -- to find out how it works and how we can support you.
You can join online, or we can cover UK travel and provide lunch.
You'll be:
- developing DA schemes to integrate heliospheric imager data into heliospheric numerical models.
- using DA constrained simulations to study the heliospheric evolution of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs).
- applying this knowledge to improve CME forecasting at Earth and elsewhere.
Looking for a research post in space weather and data asssimilation? Consider working with us!
As part of my UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project, Data Assimilation Revolution in Space Weather, I'm excited to be able to offer a 2.5 year PDRA post.
